What is so bad about Gulfport?
Crap schools, more crime/social issues, bad traffic, trashy looking.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I bailed on the thread, but had an evening work obligation, and it's been a long Saturday (Frickin' Tigers). It appears the consensus is between Pass Christian and Ocean Springs. I'll just say I'm currently leaning towards one of those while I think my wife is a slight lean to the other.

Lots of great places to live and lots of great schools to chose from.
The only school I wouldn't send my kids to would be Harrison Co schools in the Gulfport area.
Ocean Springs is a great place to live as is The Pass.
Pass is the top academic school in the state but it is that good in sports.
Gulfport and Biloxi both have top notch schools with lots of big school advantages

Gulfport city schools are great, the county schools inside the city are bad. East Gulfport has a lot of great neighborhoods

Really hard to replace what we have. We live in a great community where everyone knows everyone, neighborhood pool, playground, and soccer field. We all hang out together socially. As long as the school is on their game and offers a wide variety of AP, elective, athletics, and extra-curricular (too much to ask), I'm good. My kids are severe type A when it comes to school and will do well in most settings. I'm looking for all the other things I mentioned above.

Gulfport High has a lot of that. They have a great soccer program also

Ocean Springs is hands down the best city on the MS Coast. Hell, it may be the best city in the entire state.
Outside of the square mile or two around Porter/Washington Ave the rest of Ocean Springs is a dump.

You aren't going to go wrong with either OS or Pass with academics, so what are the other intangibles you're interested in?
Posted on 11/19/16 at 7:34 pm to Bmath
Gulf park estates is a dump. Rest of OS is good.

Like I said, community. We live in a burb of Greenville, SC with everything you could imagine as far as recreation and amenities (by far the best city in which we've lived). My son is young, but plays football and baseball. We do travel football and he's been on all-stars in baseball. My daughter is into literature and art (reads and draws). 180 degrees different, but I need to be able to support and please them both.

If I was to move to the MS gulf coast it would be Bay St Louis, Hancock County

I think OS is probably the better fit for your family since you're looking for a balance of things.

If you insist on public schools, OS is the way to go.
If Catholic, Nativity is the best elem. in Biloxi. St. James elem in Gulfport. St. Pat is the high school on hwy 67.

Did you miss the recent video on WLOX of the fight/fights at the Gulfport sports complex? Guess what school they went to.

I like Bay St. Louis as well. Depending on where your job is (A long commute in that area will suck, trust me. Live as close to where you are working as possible), I'd gravitate toward one of those two.
Looks like I'm relocating to that area as well.
Workplace is in the middle of Gulfport.............how bad would it be commuting from Bay St. Louis or Ocean Springs?

Gulfport to OS would be tough. Better stick to LB or pass
Posted on 11/20/16 at 6:58 am to CorkSoaker
Harrison County Schools inside Gulfport not Gulfport city schools

I drive from Pass to Gulfport every day. Nice 20 minute drive on the beach

Not bad at all. I work in Gulfport and there are people at my office who commute from BSL/Waveland.

Are the bridges a problem at all?
I'm thinking I'd prefer to stick to somewhere where I don't have to cross a bay.
I'll also be renting for at least a few months, so I'd like somewhere close to the beach.
