Thanks for everyone's input. Someone suggested getting a signed piece of 311 memorabilia and that's what I got. Someone on eBay was selling their latest album signed by all 5 members of the band, so I got that. Going to frame it and make it look nice.

I went though this a few years ago... ended up going with custom engraved turkey box calls and custom engraved acrylic duck calls.

If he is a serious player let him pick the case, paddle, etc. I've seen plenty of well-meaning gifts by people who knew the recipient is "really into" something and they go out and buy something that looks pretty but will never be used.
For a time I was fairly serious in playing chess and a relative bought me a good-looking little marble chess set. He thought I'd like to play with a "fancy" set. But you can't do that in a tournament, they aren't allowed.
I knew another guy who was really into billiards. Someone bought him a pretty cue stick that was terrible to actually use. You get the idea.
