Right now, fire officials are on the scene of an Air Force helicopter crash in Iberia Parish.

According to Sheriff Louis Ackal, the crash happened in the Atchafalaya Basin in the Iberia Parish panhandle. Ackal says at least one person is in the water. He says deputies are on the scene handling the recovery effort.

The Coast Guard says it is on the scene searching for wreckage, but they have not independently confirmed that a helicopter has crashed.

The Federal Aviation Administration tells KATC that the helicopter was reported missing around 4 p.m. Wednesday. The helicopter had departed from Gonzales and was heading to Patterson when it went missing.

The Air Force could not confirm that the helicopter in questions was one of theirs. However, Capt. Brian Vallier with the Louisiana wing of the Air Force Auxiliary says no Air Force personnel were on board the air craft.

We are working to get more details. We will bring you updates as they become available.

I am have been group texting with friends, one guy lives in Point Coupee Parish, his street ends at the levee. 30 mins ago he told us there were many police and emergency vehicles that went down his road and within that time he said there were more and more police cars passing by.

The reason why it's so vague is because it's necessary to find out first whether the "actually took place or not"

IBERIA PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

The body of the pilot and the helicopter that crashed in the Atchafalaya Basin on Wednesday have been found, according to a report by KATC-TV.

Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal reportedly told the Lafayette television station that the pilot's body was located shortly after the helicopter wreckage was discovered Thursday morning. It is believed the pilot was the only person on board. The victim's name has not been released.

According to a report by KLFY-TV, also in Lafayette, Ackal told the station the wreckage was found near the Iberia Parish-St. Mary Parish line.

The FAA told KATC that the helicopter was heading to Patterson from Gonzales, which is the last known position of the aircraft. It was reported missing shortly after 4 p.m.

Mike Acuna, director of operations with Gulf Coast Helicopters in Pearland, Texas, confirmed to the Raycom News Network that he has been in communication with the sheriff of Iberia Parish. He said it has not been totally confirmed that it is one of his choppers.
