I used to drive past them regularly. Would have been 2014-15. Going on 10 years after Katrina.

Who'd a thunk The Washington Post would report that some people in western North Carolina so distrust FEMA that they won't apply for aid?

Bristol Motor Speedway, up on US 11E southeast of Bristol TN/VA has been a staging area for supplies for people in and near NE Tennessee (and Va and NC).
This story will give you a good feeling for the quantity of help that was given through that portal.

If you know anyone still needing a generator have them get in touch with this guy. He went up there afterwards and cut trees built small temporary property bridges and handed out gens, starlink and food/clothes/money. He’ll vet them out. He does great things for people in need so someone needing help can benefit.

Another chunk of the I-40 roadway has just fallen into the gorge, and this means that getting two lanes -one each way- isn't going to happen when it was predicted by NCDOT to happen.

I decided to try to help by taking a vacation in western NC in the middle of May. (fwiw - was planning a trip to NC mountains before the storm)

We are flying into Asheville and looking for a mountain area to rent a cabin or a home. Is Waynesville or anyplace in between Waynesville and Asheville a good area to look in? We want to be somewhat close (1/2 hour) to restaurants, sites etc.. but still have a secluded mountain feel.

Any suggestions on a late spring vacation to the area will be greatly appreciated.

Right now, check the NCDOT sites to see where there are roads. Just east of Asheville near Black Mountain, there was serious flooding. Likewise north and east and IN Asheville itself.
Hendersonville had flooding, You would be looking south and southwest to get to the areas that didn't have extreme damage.

The restaurants aren't as good in Gatlinburg TN and thereabouts, but the damage was so much less, and the road from Cherokee to Gatlinburg is open and much of the National Park is open. To get there from the Asheville Airport, you'd drive west south west to Cherokee which has the big Indian casino and a reconstructed indian village near the entry to the Park.

RIght now there's no predicting when some roads will reopen and when and if the long time closed businesses will be able to restaff and reopen.

I just want to help the people and the economy so I am not expecting too much other than scenery.

So, staying west of Ashville on I-40 (between Ashville and Lake Junalusksa or Waynesville), I should be in as good of a spot as possible given the circumstances?

I have friends who are planning a meeting in Lake Junaluska in late spring and they are very pleased with how things are looking there.
RIght now, avoiding I-40 in planning seems to be a given. The experts are still learning just how broken the support for the Interstate road bed is. A lot of the problem is that I-40 is cut into rocks that tend to slide down to where the road was cut; what you don't see is that go on down hill and the River is a the bottom of the slope and it had a hell of a flood this time, and that newest collapse this past week just wasn't publicized as expected.

We usually stay here 3-4 times/year. About 10 minutes away from Biltmore off of Sweeten Creek road. Nice place, a bit strange driving in because you go through a neighborhood, but it opens up into a nice quiet group of cabins. Right alongside a Blue Ridge hiking trail.

Stayed here a couple of weeks ago for three days. In cold weather they restock firewood on your porch daily.

Black Mountain is open with the boil water advisory lifted, we always have dinner one night at a German place, Berliner Kindl. It was as good as always.

Got some bbq from Bears BBQ as we always do, menu was limited but very good. They collect for relief efforts, left them a donation.

Drove into the now closed Biltmore Village area, it was all underwater during the flooding. Pretty sad, it’ll be awhile before it’s rebuilt and open.

Yes, the 40 closure is past Waynesville. You’ll be good.

Just ask whoever you’re booking with about the particular road the property is on.

It's been three months and a day.

Here are some of the E-911 calls in Unicoi County in upper east Tennessee. This includes some from the hospital that was inundated.

De.30 upper east Tennessee has had several days with 3-5 inches of rain. The NWS in Morristown issued a flood warning for Cocke County. Cocke had damage from Helene and three rivers drain the mountains into that county.
According to one news report, the rivers themselves have changed: there are shoals where there were none, there are masses of debris that can dam up the waters, and there are deep pools where none were.
Pictures from this afternoon showed one river that was both very muddy and filled to the edge of its banks.

Even in Asheville, not all roads are open, or even have a completion date. LINK

quote:

The damage around those roads and bridge is extensive with debris still scattered everywhere and shipping containers partially submerged in the river below. There are even massive, overturned slabs of concrete along the roadway.

On Thursday, January 2, the Department of Transportation and the Army Corps of Engineers said they did not have a set estimated completion date.

In places, it's still that bad.
