I read the whole article, both parts. 
Setting aside the whole religious heaven debate, IMO it comes down to
--letting your child "go" peacefully surrounded by the comforts of home and family
--making your kid die in a hospital setting after what will probably be more painful procedures. She WILL die soon, that seems to be certain. The doctors don't think she will live through the next hospital stay. It's not like these procedures will save her life, they will just prolong it, so when should the suffering end?
To get back to the heaven debate, their beliefs are providing comfort to her and her family in this horrible ordeal, so I can't really fault them for that.

Put in a similar situation I wonder what some of these other folks would say...
"Sweetie you are going to die and when you do that's it. We will never see each other again and there's nothing else after death. We're going to throw you in a box and bury you and that's it. The end."

Exactly. And people have to remember that many of these children are not at the same level maturity wise than other children their age. Their sickness has forced them to sometimes mature faster at times. They have to learn realistically about death at an age where most still think of it in fantasy/magical thinking and don't think of it as permanent.
It's heartbreaking seeing children like this have to grow up so fast. If it's a disease with a poor prognosis...I don't see why you wouldn't let the child have more input into her care. At that point, what's it gonna hurt? At least the poor child can face their death the best way possible for them considering the situation. For some...it may be to fight until the very end. For others, they may just want to be home with their parents and not be tortured in hospitals anymore. Maybe she just wanted to feel, even if for a few brief moments, like a normal little girl that gets to sleep in her own room and go play outside for a few brief moments...and not spend most of her life in a hospital.

man this is tough
I would never want to be in that position because I most certainly would not want my 5 year old suffering and if I knew she was going to die, I would rather her die where she wanted to go.
This has nothing to with the parents religious beliefs to me. This is all about a 5 year old that has suffered too much in her short life and about making her death as comfortable as possible for her.

when my niece was around 4 years old she got a horrific case of Salmonella poisoning. she was in the hospital for months, kidneys shut down, and my brother was told twice that she wouldn't make it through the night.
one night they had to rush her to ICU because her kidneys had started failing again. my brother was running along side the bed with the nurses and doctors trying to calm his daughter when she looked up at him and asked "Daddy...am i going to heaven now?"
my brother stopped running...walked outside and spent the next 6 hours crying in front of the hospital.
she pulled through and will be 11 in 2 weeks.
one night they had to rush her to ICU because her kidneys had started failing again. my brother was running along side the bed with the nurses and doctors trying to calm his daughter when she looked up at him and asked "Daddy...am i going to heaven now?"
my brother stopped running...walked outside and spent the next 6 hours crying in front of the hospital.
she pulled through and will be 11 in 2 weeks.

So what are your thoughts on the medical professional that is also THE MOTHER of the little girl that still has religious beliefs. You do realize it is possible to believe in the power of modern medicine AND prayer right?

My wife is a retired physician, during the course of her career she said many prayers for patients. She also saw patients recover when all the medical evidence indicated otherwise. As she said to think those in medicine have all the answers is laughable.

Yeah, I'd have lost it right there as well. That gave me a chill just reading it.

damn.. I can't even fathom the emotional bomb that set off inside him..
Makes me sick to even think about it..
