Read the article. The assignment was called "I wish my teacher knew..." She a 3rd year teacher and says 92% of her students qualify for reduced or free lunches. 3rd grade is a crucial time of learning (for the kids) why waste a lesson plan on such BS?
I think some of you are overthinking this thing.

Wrong here...
These letters could have been taken from my wifes classroom..If half of her students had better home lives, we wouldn't have nearly as many issues as we do

It's like everyone had writing assignments like "what's your career plan" and "how would you fix the economy" in 3rd grade.

I guess I can kind of see where he's coming from. I remember hanging out at a friends house when I was in early middle school. My dad was friends with my friend's dad. My friends parents started playing home movies from when we were like 2 or 3. I said, "That's cool. My parents don't have any stuff like that. They didn't take any pictures and video of me when I was little". Basically gave a vibe that my parents didn't give a shite about me as a kid
. When my dad came pick me up the offered copies of those tapes, and my dad was like, "we have cabinets full of that crap, he just didn't know about them". So as a kid, you can say something that makes a situation seem way worse than it is. Not saying all of the above cases are like that. But to a kid, sometimes going to bed early is literally the end of the freakin' world.

I'm thinking we need to see her classes test scores on reading, writing and arithmetic .....
You know, real world stuff these kids need to be learning.

I'm sure Lucas is just trolling like normal.
But I will bet that some liberal POS teacher wrote that shite to try to hit a never with dumb arse people that will say they need more funds to deal with issues like this.

Please explain what is wrong with this? I have a lot of friends who are teachers, and especially with elementary kids, they are a huge part of their lives and make a really solid connection. The kids are genuinely sad when they know they won't be their teacher the next year. The connection between a teacher and their students is a special thing. I don't get what you people feel is messed up about this.

Yep. I don't think this teacher was looking for sob stories from her kids. It was an innocent assignment. But of course this being the OT, lots of folks will try to put the most negative and cynical spin on it.

I'm sure some of those exist. "I wish I didn't have to go to bed as early". Those notes pictured, I'm certain, don't represent EVERY student.

I meant from the childs perspective...A child that goes to bed hungry, doesn't have a parent at home to help with homework, etc. has issues in school..I see it everyday with my wife..

If this assignment was given so the teacher could learn more about her kids so she could better relate to them.....well ok. "I wish my teacher knew". She basically is asking them to tell her a secret about themselves and their story ends up in the news.

Serious Post:
Yeah this is almost certainly true, but what this person is doing isn't helping that at all. She's not offering up a solution of ANY SORT. Just trying to evoke an emotional response. This is the worst kind of worthless activism, promoting awareness. It makes a few people feel better about themselves because they made some people sad about something they'll forget about in a few minutes. This type of heart-string pulling should be mocked because it's less than worthless.
Back to non-sense:

gotcha
I hear those stories all the time from my friends. I know one who had a kid who would come in with ratty and dirty clothes and seemed hungry all the time. She'd invite this kid to hang out in her room until class started and always had a snack or something.

Were you never given a theme to write at that age? It could be something like "what I want to do this summer" or "what I want for Christmas". This assignment is no different.

Teacher - a person who teaches
I don't see anything in that definition that says to perform social experiments on the students and post it on the internet.
Half her "underprivileged" students probably won't be able to read by high school (if they don't drop out before then)... but at least she'll know about their struggles.

"Building community in my classroom is a major goal of this lesson. After one student shared that she had no one to play with at recess, the rest of the class chimed in and said, 'we got your back.' The next day during recess, I noticed she was playing with a group of girls. Not only can I support my students, but my students can support each other."
Shut the hell up.
