Loop
[TAKEN] RoadNotTaken
Once again, the LADOTD traffic "engineers" who (from a
€£%¥ing clean sheet of paper) laid out the East Bank BR I-10 in the '60s should be exhumed and publicly shot.

Not so fast. The planners were doing a great job. Someone else dropped the ball. Here's a pic of what the interstate was SUPPOSED to look like coming through BR.
I stumbled on to this a few years ago and it's absurd that they had this plan to convert Airline Hwy into an INTERSTATE bypass since 1955.
quote:
In the original 1955 plan for urban Interstate Highways, numbered by 1959, the Baton Rouge bypass was designated Interstate 410; it would have connected to Interstate 10 on both ends (as I-10 would have used the US 190 corridor immediately west of Baton Rouge, still crossing the Atchafalaya Swamp in its present location). The route was cancelled by the end of the 1960s (and the number was later reused for another Interstate 410).

Just another day in BR traffic. It may. E news worthy if everything was running smoothly.

Thanks mon frère, I was mainly venting, I knew enough folks involved with Interstate ROW procurement in the original Interstate highway build-out to have heard what a political football it was.
Dumb folks near projected interstate ROWs wanted the DOTD to take (and pay for) their land. The wise ones wanted the ROWs (and more importantly the Exits) adjacent to their land. Some long-term real estate winners were made back in the '60s.
Glad to read you did OK with today's traffic curve ball.

I'd like to read more about that as it pertains to BR to NOlA in particular.
and Yea, I check traffic three times on the way to work and on the way home.

Also something I would be interested in. If our proposed bypass was one of several or more projects that were deemed NON-critical due to labor/materials shortage when we got balls-deep in Vietnam, I wouldn't be too bothered.
But just seeing that image on paper/screen has to bother anyone who drives BR daily.
