Born in New Orleans and raised in Baton Rouge. My sons love it here good jobs and all there life time friends here. I retired from Exxon here in BR and set up for a great retirement. Wife’s family is from Zachary. I will proudly spend my last days in BR the place I love. Oh and to top it off I am 15 minutes from LSU and make most of all LSU games. To me just being in Tiger stadium or Alec Box or the PMAC is heaven on earth. Plus food and people are great. As far as crime goes 95% of violent crimes are in one area north BR. Stay away from that area and your find .Nothing there anyway. Geaux Tigers Geaux BR.

I love everything you said, but…

This post is truly sad. To each their own but you’re kidding yourself if you think BR is a great place to live or raise a family, and frick LSU

I usually reply about my hometown with "glad I'm from there."

Cause I damn sure don't wanna still be there.

Your only regret will be why you didn’t do it sooner.

Northern Georgia and Alabama, eastern Tennessee, western NC and upstate SC are a real sweet spot in the south.

The summers are actually quite pleasant compared to LA and TX.

Huntsville is absolutely booming. Tech sector with NASA, lots of government work with FBI & Army at Redstone, Toyota engine factory going in, best public schools in AL (I know, tallest midget) and decent duck hunting and fishing along Tennessee River. If I had it to do over again...

I was 22, a job took me out of NOLA to Houston. At first, I was homesick as all hell, just wanted to go back to my old stomping grounds. But then years became decades away from NOLA, I visited less & less. I realized I was so lucky to get away and lead a more fulfilling life. Don't get me wrong- I enjoyed growing up and being schooled in NOLA/Jefferson/Metarie, but NOLA has been in decline for decades and nothing can save it...nothing! Thanks for the memories...

My story, too; NOLA born and raised. We left in 1984. I was beyond homesick, as was my NOLA wife. But we went back once or twice a year to be with family. And of course, to eat. Since then, lived in IA, KY, GA, FL, and now TX. Came to realize the NOLA I love and miss is a NOLA long gone. What is there now is a shell, a poor imitation of all the great people and places that made NOLA what it was. I still miss NOLA GONE BY, but that ain’t never coming back. When we visit now, we rarely set foot in Orleans Parish. But we do know where to find great po boys, sea food, and snowballs in St. Tammany and Tangipahoa.,

I keep asking myself, when is enough going to be enough for people? Especially those that lived through Katrina.

I vividly recall driving down Canal St. in Mid City in 2004 and thinking to myself, "this city is dying". A year later, Katrina blew through. And I chose to stay (and invest by buying property) in the city, mostly because I felt I couldn't "abandon it". But I also said I'd never live through that again.

And honestly, living in New Orleans between 2006-2010 I always sort of felt was the high water mark of the rebuild. There was optimism the city could maybe correct its past mistakes. There was new blood coming into the economy.

And strangely, it's almost like after the Saints won the Super Bowl, things slowly just returned to the state of normality pre-Katrina.

It just got too hard to justify a perpetual feeling I had of being stuck. And could never leave because of familial ties, etc. It was hard as hell to do, but truth be told, I haven't missed it much at all in the two years we've been gone. We miss friends and family, sure, but like everyone else said, we can hop on a two hour direct flight four times a year for long weekends and frankly, I'd see them just as much as I did when I was living there.

Why are some people questioning other's decision to live in louisiana despite hurricanes every now and again? Louisiana is my home. Its where my family is and where ive been my entire life. Sure, i could move elsewhere and not have to deal with hurricanes, but there are pros qnd cons no matter where you move. shite happens, thats life. One thing i do know is that there is no other state with the culture and people like louisiana has, and thats most important to me after my family. If you cant deal with the occasional hurricane, then move, but you will find that shite happens wherever you move. You move up north and you will freeze your arse off half the year and deal with power outages/road closures/being snowed in as well. Everywhere has its good and bad aspects. Louisianas good aspects outweigh the bad in my opinion and its my familys home so im staying for life barring some unforseen drastic change. Wouldnt want to live anywhere else either honestly. If you feel differently, then fricking move. Adios motherfricker.

I don't think hurricanes are driving people out, probably just tips the scales in lots of folks decision making
