Years ago, we took our own boats out of west palm to the Bahamas. Cell phone service was not what it is now. It was very “nautical “ that day. The only way to get in touch back home was a collect call, I spoke to my wife for a total of 45 seconds and it was like a $55 call.

Additionally the old man had a AT&T phone credit card.
When I worked for the government, I was issued a phone card and a Line Priority card. I had never heard of one before when they issued it to me. It was a card with a long series of numbers on it. You would pick up a land line or enter it into a cell phone and it would guarantee you a circuit to complete a call by kicking someone else off of their phone call. I thought it was completely useless until 9/11 and Katrina happened. I used it both times to make calls when the phone systems were tied up and all you would get was a fast busy signal when you tried to use the phone.

A pay phone could dial the operator without putting money in it. You’d collect call your house. Parents would deny the charge, the operator would end the call and the parents would come pick you up.
I was poor as a kid but never that poor.

All the time when I was a kid. I would go camping or on vacation and would call mom from a pay phone.

Hahaha millenials!!
Way back in the day when Hodges was a freshmen men's dorm(no A/C), I would call home collect and parents wouldn't accept the charges. Then they would call direct. Cheaper. Way before cell phones and pagers(another story for another day, kids)!

If you made a collect call now, you probably get an operator(maybe, do they have them anymore)That doesn't speak english

When I first started working offshore you could have the Marine operator connect you to a phone number through the VHF radio. Problem was your call was on an open radio channel. Heard many a gf/wife dump their man over the VHF.

I used to hitchhike back to college and my grandmother asked me to call her collect at her house when I arrived.
I made the collect call and the operator asked if she would accept a call from me. She replied in a panic that, "if he was calling from college, no. If he was calling from somewhere else than yes."
That was the last time I tried to call her collect.

East BTR was long distance to West BTR back in the day. I would collect call friends and they would call right back

All of my collect calls were quickly saying “mom come get me” when they asked for my name.
