No surprise here. My wife got conned into a cabin filter/air intake filter with her standard oil change at Take 5. Spent $165. I was livid. I'm pretty sure half the bill was the oil change, and understandable a 5 minute oil change is strictly a service charge.

Last week I bought the air intake and cabin filters for less than $40 total and showed her so she can see how bad she got ripped off initially. They didn't even rotate the damn tires.

I definitely have sticker shock for auto batteries. Mine was $300 at Auto Zone about 6 months ago.

I don't know why but in my head batteries are still like $80, and I replace them so infrequently I guess I forget how expensive they are now.

We recently had a new, 24 year old deputy that took his unit to our maintenance guy to tell him he needed his blinker fluid topped off, based on the suggestion of one of the older deputies. Maintenance guy caught on to the joke and sent him down to the auto parts store saying he had been busy lately and had run out. This idiot actually went and finally learned he was being fricked with at the parts store

I cannot believe people still fall for the oldest joke in the book, but it just goes to show that there is a HUGE gap in common sense between Gen Z and everyone else

I’ve changed transmission fluid before but a lot of new vehicles have sealed transmissions where you can’t do it anymore.

I’ve flushed a radiator too.

I change the brake fluid out every five years. It absorbes water from the atmosphere and degrades, leading to a stiff pedal and loss of feel. I have a shop do it on my cars and truck, since they have the right tool to activate the ABS so the module gets flushed as well. I do my motorcycles myself, and do them at least once a year, usually. Fresh fluid just makes modulating the brakes easier and you get a nice feel from the lever (not wooden).

I try and change my antifreeze every five years as well. It's just cheap insurance. I do it myself, and mix it myself with the concentrated stuff and distilled water. I run Engine Ice in my motorcycles, and don't change it unless I have to open the system for some reason like replacing a radiator.

I have the transmission fluid changed at at least half the recommended factory interval. Again, it's cheap insurance. I keep my vehicles for a long time, so it pays off for me in the end.

When I'm on the road, I have to use oil change places for my engine oil in whatever vehicle I'm in, and I see them pushing cabin and engine air filter changes on everyone, at nearly three times the cost of if they'd do it themselves. But then, most people are absolutely clueless about how to anything even as simple as changing an air filter.

Subaru specifies a brake fluid change at either 15,000 or 30,000 miles, depending on usage/conditions. I've done at least 2 of those.
