restore.la.gov

There are 6 "phases" you could fall under once you complete the survey.

I fell under Phase 3. Still a few repairs left.

Everybody should photoshop a big middle finger on that and promptly send it to the governor's mansion.

I was going to do this for my parents... until I saw that it only applies to people that had no flood insurance.

I don't quite understand how the reimbursements are structured.

LMI and AMI?

And then I get 25% of work completed? I think I remember you saying you didn't use a contractor. Neither did I. We did much of the work ourselves. I have every receipt of course.

So, if a person did the right thing and got flood insurance for, say, $100k and the damage was estimated at $140k then that person is SOL? But a person who neglected to get flood insurance is AOK?

That is correct. Like I said, I was going to do the survey for my parents since they got hit... but then I saw this:

quote:

The federal assistance that Congress has appropriated to Louisiana as of April 2017 is intended under this program to provide at least some assistance to all flood-impacted homeowners who experienced major or severe damage and did not have flood insurance for their structure at the time of the flood.

ETA - you know what... frick it. I'm going to sign them up anyway. Worst thing that happens is they say "no".

I agree. That is bullshite how things are in this country. If you do the right thing, you are cast aside.

Or fricked over. My parents used their savings to rebuild because they didn't want to wait on the insurance company. Now the insurance co has cut a check but their mortgage company is holding it hostage. They completed the repairs, the mortgage co sent out their inspector who said it was good, and now they're fighting to get their money back. It's bullshite.

Sorry to hear that. What the hell is wrong with people these days. People pay their premiums and mortgages ON TIME or get hosed, but when it is their turn to pay they hose you again on slow pay.

Your parents should get interest payments on their money the bank is holding on to.

We did not have flood insurance. I used my savings. Hit the ground running. We had drywall and insulation before we could even get back to the house. I had flooring and tape and float scheduled as well. Gutted, cleaned, mold treatment, sheetrock, paint, electrical, etc done myself with the help of friends an family. 4 feet of water meant 8 feet to pull out and replace. Moved back in on November first after living in my FIL's camper in the driver. He worked on the house every morning; I worked on it every evening. I decilined LA Shelter at Home. I declined a FEMA trailer. I didn't need those things. I do have a lot of loans to pay off though. If I can get help for that I'm going to take it.

We have insurance now. Have to.

I hear you. I know every story is different and that is my point. If someone had insurance but, for whatever reason, the damage was more than the coverage then they are not even considered.

I've heard all the horror stories. So many people have said that it would have been better to not have it and that's just sad. We are now over-insured in hopes that if a tragedy happens again, we at least have some cushion.

Sounds like a similar situation to my parents. I was there the first day I could get into their neighborhood ripping out sheetrock. For the next several days it was a group of family members there all day doing work. They didn't get any FEMA help or Shelter at Home... nothing. It was all done with their money and help from family.

They pay their bills, had flood insurance, did everything they were supposed to do... now they just want the money that insurance paid out to rebuild their savings that was drained. The mortgage company is fricking around and keeps demanding more paperwork and shite... this has been going on for about 3 months now. They finally got fed up and are seeking an attorney to try to help them get their insurance check from the mortgage company.
