Lafayette is safer, has better public schools, nicer mardi gras, and offers a much better pace of life for families. However, Lafayette’s economy is really struggling, and it shows in the nightlife and entertainment options which aren’t as good as BR’s these days, which aren’t great either.
Lafayette is pretty nice, but it still feels a little too small to me. It needs to get that oil money back flowing to leave BR in the dust. Lafayette has all the potential in the world.
All of this
Lafayette hasn’t been the same since the offshore market tanked in mid 2014

The oil market may never return to where it was 15 years ago. It will still exist but it's time for economies that depend heavily on it to diversify.

For a second I thought you were talking about New Orleans post Katrina
Then I read,

I realized you weren’t

BR has been falling back. Does not mean Lafayette is getting better
To me, this is a good description.
I spent 17 years in Laffy and don’t think it has any redeeming values !

I would live in some of the cities outside of Lafayette like Broussard. But Lafayette city limits is a dump.

Too bad Baton Rouge doesn’t have forrest fires. Floods and crime aren’t doing the trick.

Private yes, public I don’t think so.

I’ll take your word on it. I have an online library card and that’s it.

dining scene
Fine dining, probably, but every day dining I don’t think BR is a clear choice

Baton Rouge High is better than Lee. I'll give you that Lee is relatively new as a magnet but it's not really close right now.

Having one good school isn’t a indicative of a city having good public schools. It would be as accurate as saying BR schools suck because they have McKinely.

Incorporated Baton Rouge plus Saint George.

It is a bold assumption to state that NO is number one, IMHO
