I’m thinking about making a career change and like the idea of working on/around choo choo trains. Anyone have any insights?

You may want to stop calling them "choose choose trains".

ETA: SEE....even my phone won't let me call them that.

I think my ex wife wanted to be a conductor because I saw in her browser history where she had been googling how to get a train started.

CENLALSUFAN moved into the career and kept the board updated on just about everything. Think he moved from Eunice or some shite to Prairieville chasing the dream. No idea what role he plays.

Also had about 9 kids during the process so warn your wife.

I had a Lionel that Santa bought at Sears in 1954. Worked on it for two or three years before putting it away in the storage room. My brother got it and I think his grandson works on it now.

For me, choo chooing was a passion that died fairly quickly. I question your ability to make a career out of it. Why not try Legos? I think they have TV show competitions for them. You might be able to work your way into that.

Never worked for the railroad. I have gathered that when you start you pretty much married to the job and on call 24-7/365. No social life and hard on the body and marriages. Good pay and retirement.

Grandfather retired from IC around 2000 after 40 something years. Couldn’t tell you exactly what he did because I think in the last decade of his time there he got to sit around the office. They seem to have a decent union. Good benefits. He seemed to enjoy it and never spoke negatively about the job.

I was a switchman for a very short period of time.

It was awful and extremely dangerous.

I'd advise against it.

Brother works for a choo choo train company. The work/life balance is not great, pay is decent. See him maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

What about the guy who yells “all aboard” and punches tickets? That seems like a good gig.

There is a guy here, go figure, that actually did this and had a good thread. It seems we have a bit of everything. Hope he chimes in to help. Can't remember the name.
