Good to know. They dont tell you that info in the guide books

I'm considering going there among other places in the next month or 2. It's just a possibility at the moment.

How the hell did he get caught? That's like the easiest thing to smuggle into the states

He had them taped to his leg underneath his pants. His belt set off the metal detector. Brilliant, I know.

Some dumbass kid on my trip got busted trying to smuggle cigars through Customs. It did NOT end well.

What trip, and what happened to him?

I went on a mission trip in 2005 through my church. He got yelled at a lot by customs for like an hour and our whole group was searched..which was unfortunate b/c everyone 18 and younger had cigars on them Most of us ended up having to toss ours lest we got caught. Pretty sure the kid got fined. I shouldnt call him a dumbass actually..we were all sneaking them through one way or another, he was just younger and trying to fit in. Turned out to be a pretty successful guy.

The food is amazing, coffee is the best you'll ever drink, the rum is awesome.

I've always just shoved them in the bottom of my backpack and walked through. Never had a problem.

I've never really been to the caribbean or central america/mexico (except for on a cruise). How does it compare? Is it worth visiting over other places in central america or the caribbean?

They love Americans actually. Flew into Cuba after a layover in Mexico. Easy in and out, rudimentary accommodations, but nice people. If Customs sees a Cuban stamp in your passport it is not good.

and fwiw the cigars are the most overrated thing on the planet

Because all of the cigar rollers that made them famous left for places like the DR when Fidel came to power.

You're asking a Mexican so my answers are probably a little biased. To me Central and South America are some of the best places you'll ever visit, along with the Caribbean

Seems to me it would be pretty easy to buy some crap cigars in Mexico and just switch them out.

I mean, who can tell the difference once the little label is pulled off of them?

If you came back into the us with a Cuban stamp, what type of problems are we looking at? Slap on the wrist fine, or pain in the arse legal issues for awhile?

You can't . That's actually how they send them to you when you order them. The cigars arrive in one package and then a few days later you get the labels

I want to say the max penalty is something like 10 years in prison and $250,000 fine. Traveling to Cuba is not technically against United States law, but spending money there is

For someone who has never been to any of those places and looking for some adventure, what are some places that you'd recommend the most?

My old roommate from college went last year. It was a very depressing experience.

Link to all of her blog posts about the trip.
