I have a little personal experience with this.
My dad was a full blown alcoholic. Mixed a whiskey and diet coke every morning for years. We had an intervention with him, sent him to one of the best rehab facilities in the country and he was drunk when he got back off the plane. He died a couple years later of liver failure.
To parrot other posters here, if they don't want the help, its a waste of time.
I had my own intervention once after I blacked out at a friends wedding 3 years ago. They made me go to outpatient rehab for a month or so, but I eventually told them to frick off.. I enjoy drinking. Just gotta keep it in check and now I stick to beer for the most part. And moderation so far has been working.

It’s a delicate process.
First, you corner your him. You have to get kinda violent, honestly. Anything goes. That’s the first step: inflict physical pain.
Then you have to call him names and tell him he’s ruining everyone’s life. Call him a little fat boy. That’s the emotional pain.
Then you have to make him feel crazy. Like tell him it’s Tuesday, even if it’s not. Make him believe he smoked your mailbox with his car (you might have to smash up your mailbox) ... that will hurt him mentally.
Take these steps, and he’ll be chomping at the bit to get in that rehab robe. It worked on my uncle after a couple tries.
Good luck.

Whatever you do: make sure you follow through with any threats given. “Won’t see you anymore.. “won’t talk to you anymore” etc. unless you get help.

No direct experience, but knowing that if someone isn't open to the idea of getting help on their own terms and their own timeline, the odds will be stacked against them.
Your sister needs to decide what she wants to do and what she will accept, not accept or tolerate. She may not have not direct control over him (it sounds like the alcohol does at the moment), however, she can control what she does from this point forward. But she must be willing to go through with whatever she decides and stick to it. Otherwise, he'll likely try to find a way to be manipulating to get what he wants --- because an intervention wasn't his idea to get the help he needs when he needs it.

It's literally the exact same thing.

Is that bad?

You may want to look into the Sinclair Method as a suggestion / different method of treatment.

I can really give you solid advice here but I need to ask brutal questions. Is your BIL a hopeless junkie and drinker? I need to know a lot more about his using habits, his job status, do they have children together? There are redeemable users and hopeless users out here. You sound like you’re not of the chemical abuser type so I will try to help you with brutal questions you may have.

Do you/she have a place lined up for treatment?

What’s literally the exact same thing? The Salvation Army has a homeless shelter and a totally separate live in treatment center on the same grounds.

your sister needs to kick his arse out. Nothing clicked or worked for me until my wife did that.

I was going to say the exact same thing but first reply nailed it. I could have just given the reply its 53rd upvote but decided to copy his reply and say I agree instead.
