Do you live here? Are you familiar with the current dialog? No? Did I read a "no"?

Then STFU.

The defendant (and counselman) have absolutely cried racism in this case. That's been the stance of the protestors. The judge has had enough.

I wondered how a Houston political topic got to 5 pages but I see it's a Tangarine bash session. Carry on.

He's charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Kubosh helped pay for for his $80,000 bond.

Judge McSpadden says since Townes managed to pay the bond, he can afford his own attorney. The judge ordered him to court for 10 straight days last month until he could hire someone to represent him.

"If you can not afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you...."

I have heard that a few million times on TV etc. (never personally) How is this decided? This judge has gone out on a limb here. People seem have to have been careful NOT to mention race? At least in the OP quotes.

Does a person have to show proof of being unable to afford and attorney? Or does the law of self preservation kick in, and if a person wants to be well represented he finds the money? Or roll the dice on your public defender?

The jailers ascertain your financial responsibilities against income, living situation, etc. etc. This is all done hours before you are arraigned by a judge and read your charges and given a bail amount.

The courts take it all into consideration. You can't just request a public defender because you're too cheap to pay for one or would rather just take a quick guilty plea.

The defendant will receive hundreds of mailers from attorneys in their area seeking to represent the case.

The Judge would have been wise to have remained silent.

this. nobody with any sense wants a public defender. you don't scrimp when your freedom is at risk.
