It's always weird when a topic gets bumped and I start reading, then find a comment that I made, and then I realize that this thread was from over a year ago.

What was the massive explosion in WWI where they tunneled beneath an enemy position with the explosives?

Referring to the Battle of Messines I think.

There was a movie about it.

Reading Wiki, it says that the mines used in this battle were the largest planned explosion in history until the first test of the atomic bomb.

vaporized it and enough water to briefly expose the bottom of the harbor.

How'd they know this?

Witnesses... it's not like everyone died, just people down close to the water.

Yea, that is it. Thanks.

Do we know the amount of explosives used then?

I'm sure you can find it somewhere. I don't think it was the only place mines like that were used but it was the biggest. There are several places along the old trenches you can still visit today where the craters are still there.

I believe this is the one at The Somme

From the bottom of the story.

I WANT TO BE THIS GUY

quote:

In September 1938, while traveling through Louisiana documenting sugar plantations, rice farmers, and oyster fishermen, photographer Russell Lee stopped off at Danos’ Nightclub, a roadhouse off Highway 1 in the tiny community of Raceland.

As it happened, he showed up on a Friday night, just in time for Danos’ free weekly crab boil.
