As the credit card holder you DO have to call the police the moment you realize there are fraudelant charges, the credit card company won't even recognize them as fraudelant unless you have filed a criminal complaint first.

That is the credit card company of course trying to avoid having to cover the fraudelant charges, because if you don't file a report, you are liable for the charges and thus they expect you to pay and if you call them and say "I didn't file a criminal complaint but these charges aren't mine" they can tell you tough shite and make you pay. However, by law if you have filed a criminal complaint they must at minimum remove the charges from account until the situation is resolved (meaning either they decide to just drop it altogether or someone is arrested) which means if you call and say "hey someone frauadently charged $12000 on my card and I've filed a police report on it" they can't continue to charge you interest on the $12K in disputed charges and eventually they must decide whether to pursue it legally or just eat the charges.

It would be absolutely stupid not to file a criminal complaint.

You are 100% patently wrong, and I mean like down to the sentence.

You seem confident in your blatant ignorance though.

None of that is true. I’ve never called the police when I had fraudulent charges on my card, just called the card company and they removed them.

I've dealt with several credit card companies over fraudulent charges as a law enforcement officer and I never say a company that would just take the card holder's word for it. They have ALL required a criminal report.

Interesting. I just bought a $3500 TV off a guy in the Sam's club parking lot.

Small world.

Every transaction is tied to a membership number. Should be easy to track the transaction to a register, see the perp on camera, back track the cameras to the moment that they walked into the club. The membership will have the perp's name, address, phone number.

I think you mean to say "make them any MORE true" however, I don't lie, I don't have to. I spend 25 years in the Army , most of it in law enforcement.

I have no reason to argue with you because I really don’t care but Barclays and AMEX don’t work that way.

Neither does Discover, Capital One, JP Morgan, or Bank of America. He's either lieing or stupid, not sure which is worse considering his confidence in the matter

Also, for those who think they can just buy gift cards with the stolen card....Sam's has policies on large purchases of gift cards. The registers flag the membership and won't allow them to be processed. It's part of an anti-money laundering law.

Agreed. I've to deal with fraud on my credit cards several times and never had to call the police or file a report. Most of the times my credit card company called me when they suspected fraud.

Maybe they did that 20 years ago when it was less common, back then I’m sure you had to physically steal a card to use it.

I know a guy that works in the fraud department for one the big banks, Ive talked to him about how the process works so I have a decent idea of what goes on. I've also had my credit card compromised more than once and have been refunded everytime without doing anything except confirming which ones weren't mine

If you don't file a police report, you are letting scuz get away with it.

Don't be that person.

No you aren't. They technically aren't even stealing from you. The credit card company will pursue the charges.

I was thinking the same thing. Sams could easily figure this out. I guess they will when Chase pulls that 3500 back from them.

I had someone make some fraudulent charges on my bank card at a local store recently. They also tried to do it at a few drug stores but my bank caught it in time and deactivated my card. When I called my bank they told me that they had been having a lot of issues with this recently and that it was due to a security breach that occurred a while back. I was assuming that breach was with the bank but they didn't go into detail where it occurred. The bank said that the criminals get your banking information and get a "comp card". From what I understood it sounded like they basically pretended to be me and ordered an extra banking card. They said it definitely wasn't from a skimmer or from ordering online. I specifically asked my bank if I should report the fraudulent charges to the police and was told no, that they would handle that, and that the police wouldn't do anything about it if I reported it myself. All I had to do was file some paper work with the bank and was told that I would almost certainly be reimbursed for the charges.
