Lafayette economy sucks
So does the New Orleans economy. People pretending the city was booming because of restaurants were missing the mark.

Sometimes I feel that 95% of OT posters have never been to New Orleans or have only been to bourbon street. Ive been here over 60 years and can tell you 100% that’s it’s better than at any time in my life. Yes the last year has been tough all over the country but Nola is way better than it was pre Katrina. It’ll bounce back quickly. I was in a restaurant this weekend and there were tourist there and there was life in the air. As quickly as the vaccine arrives so will they city boom. Anyone who has been to south market, the warehouse district, magazine st etc... knows this city is alive. Better than most.

This has always confused me about the OT. You’ve 100% contradicted the OP’s description of the current state of affairs of the city.
Which is it? It can’t be one person saying it’s doom and gloom and you saying it’s thriving?

That is just not true. The job market in NOLA is terrible. Engineering gone, oil gone, Finance/Accounting scarce, service industry now gone, medical good, and law good. The city is crap.

People equate going to breweries and a new restaurant after as “the city is booming.”” What’s wrong about that is New Orleans having an economy closer to Baton Rouge or Shreveport than most major metropolitan areas.

Is it all out of state people buying 2nd homes that sustain the real estate market? Parts of Nola have prices that you'd expect to see in a booming economy like Austin

You can move out of N.O.

There just isn't a lot of real estate to buy. It is tightly packed between the river and lake. No new territory to build = high prices. Unless you want to go across the lake.

Great post and you nailed it
Anyone that believes New Orleans is just going to go away, you’re going to be severely disappointed.
The hotels and restaurants will rebound, new concepts will be introduced.
The Saints and the Pels aren’t going anywhere
The hospitals and universities aren’t going anywhere
The Port of NOLA and the Mississippi River isn’t going anywhere
The Superdome, Casinos and Convention Center isn’t going anywhere
The multi billion airport isn’t going anywhere
The city has been through much worse if you want to include the fires, wars and Katrina.
I know some people don’t wanna hear that but I’m sorry to burst your bubble.

Curious what year did Hearn write that? And in the end Hearn said frick New Orleans and moved to Japan.
1879.
Big Easy blues echo through history
Hearn said frick every place he’d ever been. His formative years were a series of abandonments by the people closest to him including his parents and family. It took literally going halfway across the world to escape his past

What shipping do you think we still do out of the port? Most of that has moved to mobile and jacksonville. Like was said before, a city needs to be more than bars and hotels.

Broome? I don't recall us having subphases unless I just haven't been paying enough attention.

I was under the impression that New Orleans, and its economy, was really thriving? I thought that it was experiencing a resurgence? Isn’t (quality) real estate in the city booming and really expensive?

Interesting read.
I liked this.
1869-1879 don't sound too bad.
