This is more annoying than anything. I'm over in a corner doing dumbell curls, focused, and approaching my last few reps. Dipshit comes and stands between me and the mirror and asks if I'm using the bench (which is probably 30ft away). I haven't approached or used the bench since I walked in the gym and there was zero weight on or around it so it was obvious nobody else was either. Had the same thing happen while I was doing squats a few weeks ago. Seriously????? Does it look like I'm using the freaking bench and is it that urgent that you can't wait for me to finish two more reps before asking????

All I got from this is that you have a small penis. I also didn't read any of it.

Did you make sure that the 16" long dildo was up your arse too? All you have to do is fricking nod. It's not that hard.

Don't have to worry, if someone isn't on a machine I just assume they aren't using it

I really don't know anything about gym etiquette so I probably annoy other dudes constantly.

Interrupting a set is grounds to throw down. Check knuckles first.

Yeah - I never bother anyone in the middle of a set unless it is a clear safety issue or they're actively seeking assistance.

Now, if you're between sets and it is unclear if you've finished with the equipment, I might ask.

If I didn't see you use it, I assume it is free and available. I am not offended if I missed it and someone says, "Hey, buddy, I'm not done - 1 more set." - I've both done that and been on the receiving end of that and that is completely appropriate.

When I'm on a machine, I hang around right there for that reason - to make it clear I'm not done. If it is selectorized, I'll offer the option to work in (unless I'm supersetting) - otherwise, I'll indicate, "I just started, 5 sets" or "I have just 1 more set," etc. If a group is waiting, I'll affirmatively go, "It's all yours" when I'm done.

Got one guy at my gym that puts his on top of the dumb bells

That's bullshite - I would talk to management. If there aren't bag spots - I'm fine with a guy holding a bench between sets (reasonably) but someone staking out the entire dumbbell rack is bullshite.

He should have known you were a lame bodybuilder and wouldn't be using the bench.

Just glance over to him and let out a big fart. It's a quick way to say I claim this area. It's clean over there so take it. I use this tactic at the squat rack. Seems to keep people from asking me anything.
