Just heard a gun shot outside of my window. I live on Burthe. Damn shame. No link or pics. Just can't sleep and now I'm even more awake.

You sure it wasn't something else? On my neighborhood Facebook page, people have mistaken transformers blowing and other loud noises for gunshots several times. Not saying what you heard wasn't a gunshot of course.

People in NOLA fire a shot out of their car window to let the person in the house know that they have arrived. In other parts of the country, it's more traditional to honk your horn. Legend has it that this goes back to the days of Jean Lafitte when he would announce his arrival by firing one of his ship's cannons.
You can always spot a non-native when they flinch at the sound of gunfire. New Orleanians refer to themselves as "Yats". This is because of the common phrase "Where's ya gat?"
