Yeager has a history of this type of shite.
The first aspect of his pistol training involves dropping your pistol on the ground. He claims you shouldn't train with a gun you're afraid to scratch.
Well earlier this year one of his instructors did this as a demo and it went off and flattened someone's tire in a parking lot.

I can not think of a single situation where too much lube has caused an issue for me

Back when I was in the academy, we had a guy show up to the range, get his duty belt and sidearm(loaded) out of his trunk, and promptly shot a hole in his own car. He was excused from the class

Guy I train with has a beater rifle that he's trying an experiment on. No cleaning, only lube. He's well over 30k and it's still running. Had a barrel change at about 15k I think

I have stared down that little black hole on a Glock once. The girl holding it wanted no part of shooting, and my idiot buddy was basically forcing her to. She turned with finger on the trigger, and that gun turned right to me. I did an immediate limbo. Looking into that little hole makes your body do things you didn't know it was capable of.

I know my experience isn't universal - but in all the years/rounds with GI M-16s - I think I had 1 problem rifle on one occasion - every other malfunction was clearly on the ammunition and/or magazine. The weapons are particularly finicky with blanks, for example.
But - anecdotally - running it kind of dry, "normal" or wet didn't produce any short-term or intermediate-term problems, at least for me - and we're talking about roughly 2 dozen weapons, and 25k+ rounds (about half blanks) over almost 30 years.
