If however, it is federally funded….they need to feel some harsh budget cuts,
The Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge in Gulf Shores is primarily funded through a $7.9 million federal BUILD Grant (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development) awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This grant was part of a larger $14.4 million federal award that also financed the widening of Highway 59, with the bridge construction being a mandatory condition of that funding agreement.

Gulf Shores is rolling in tax money. You should see the new high school they’re finishing. Lots of great bike trails too.

Good so they can fit your average overweight Alabamian instead of taking the stairs.
Speaking of pedestrian access, in Houma they are closing the pedestrian walkway on the twin spans in downtown so they can replace a beam that was bent by a boat that struck the bridge.
So DOTD’s contractor has been building a detour for pedestrians using the Northbound span. They narrowed the northbound lanes, eliminated the shoulder, restriped the newly striped lanes from a previous repaving project that was just completed, added a concrete divider between the travel lanes and new pedestrian area, and they just finished a temporary wooden structure to further divide the pedestrian lane from the travel lanes. They even built an extra sidewalk to access the detour. They did all of this for about a month of closure to replace the beam.
At the rate they are going, they are going to spend more building this pedestrian detour than the cost to repair the beam. Hopefully, the state takes that maritime’s insurance company to the cleaners to cover all of that pedestrian detouring and pavement markings that will need to be redone.
