Not without disrupting planktonic organisms. Doing such could have an impact on fish larvae.
Well, which has a bigger impact?
Would disrupting planktonic organisms but also removing a large percentage of plastic waste from that portion of the Gulf be a net positive or negative?

Sounds like a next step for Dr. Benfield's research

I'm sure it must have some impact on wildlife.
If we give this research team a few million over the next ten years they will certainly find enough evidence to justify another 5-10 year study for a few million more.

Also probably more feasible to stop more from reaching the Gulf when it's much more narrowly contained in rivers than it would be to collect it all out in the open water.

Am I misguided for caring more about this form of pollution, rather than supposed CO2 depletion of the Ozone?

Not at all.

Why don't you stop by ECE 2271 and discuss your novel idea with Dr Benfield?

This might actually be worth looking into, given its impact on Louisiana's seafood industry.

What? You might need to do a bit of research...mixing two issues.

It is crazy that some major industrial manufacturing company hasn't re-scaled these, tweaked the design and started producing them to sell to governments. You'd make a fortune

Only thing I throw overboard are bottles and cans.
Gonna have a solid artificial reef soon.

Plastic is awful. I wish we would stop producing it and use alternatives.

Are you at least weighing them down first?

I believe have the right to be skeptical given the amount of "research" that has occurred at the tax payers expense over the last decade+. I'm sorry you are offended because you know the man and/or he is affiliated with LSU, but we spend enough in research. Let a private company do the research and present the state/federal government a solution. I'd much rather see taxpayer money spent on solutions than I would seemingly never ending research that either finds no solution or that more money is needed to research some more.
