Yellowstone getting ready to blow. Can you imagine if that happens in our lifetime? Would suck but would also be kind of awesome.

It has erupted on average every 200,000 years... we are currently at 300,000 years since the last eruption.
Of the last 3 occurrences, two covered the midwest with ash and pyroclastic material. The big one covered as far south as Louisiana and most of Texas.
When it blows again, it will cover most of the US West of the Mississippi River in ash (inches for us, multiple feet the closer you get to the site)
Above is a map of the last 3 events and their coverage. That's Mt. St. Helens last eruption in the NW corner for reference.

Ash is not the only problem.
Since airplanes have been invented since the last eruption, it will cease all air travel for months, possibly years. Airplanes will not be able to navigate, and their engines would fail taking in all of the ash instead of pure air. The ash clouds will change the climate for years as it will limit the amount of sun that gets through. That will mess up crops... well that and the acid rain.
Closer to the eruption site, there will be massive landslides and lahars (mud and debris flow down streams and rivers).
What happened with Yellowstone, is that the magma chamber lost pressure or had a void space that allowed the earths crust to collapse on itself forming a caldera volcano.
But it's not extinct, only dormant. The gas pressure will, and has been, steadily increasing until it blows again.
Much like a coke can, once you open it and relieve pressure off it goes. The gaseous explosive eruptions are the ones that throw the ash and pyroclastic material and tend to be super violent like Mt. St. Helens. You don't want to be within miles of an eruption.
Whereas, places like Hawaii you can walk right up to a lava flow and be relatively safe.
The viscosity of the magma plays a major role in eruption style. Places like Hawaii it flows easy and doesn't build up as much pressure. Places like Yellowstone and the Cascade Mountains have a much thicker magma that stops up the vent, cools and begins holding in pressure from underneath until it reaches it's breaking point.

I like to think in 20,000 years we will be able to not only detect imminent eruptions with ease, but also artificially induce smaller pressure releasing events to curtail mass extinction event eruptions.
