Debatable. The farther they ventured outside their religious borders the more resistance they would have met.
Now they are taking over Europe because the world wars and progressivism emasculated mainland european politics.

The Middle East was wrecked by the Mongols, but Europe wasn't about to be overrun. Byzantium was pressured of course, and centuries later the Ottomans got all the way to the gates of Vienna, but at the time of the Mongols it wasn't happening.

I've always wondered, why don't countries win land or resources anymore? For instance the US should own half of Kuwait and Iraq, plus have oil rights forever. The same with parts of Europe and islands in the south Pacific. Let the conquered countries pay us off. The military should be a huge money maker for us. We are good at it. We should get protection fees from everybody else..
Back to the OP, i like the the Spanish-American war. Lasted a short time. The US destroyed them and got tons out of it. Should have taken Cuba as well. But i think this is where other countries started to realize the sleeping giant we could be..

I still think the defining war still resonating today is the crusades. Can you imagine if the Ottomans hadn't taken over the middle East, and in its place was a Christian pro Europe government? That would have had huge consequences today.
