Well, since you didn't specify 1800 BC or AD, I'll go with Alexander the Great and his Macedonian ruler who defeatd the the Persians in 334 BC.
jk...that was a great force, but of course it's the USA military of WW2.

IRAQ 1 to me. Had all if of it. The pinnacle of the results of the cold war combined main force, lessoned learned from WW2, with fully developed navy and air support, learned from Nam, coupled with GPS, stealth, night vision, and satellite based warfare.

No way. It wasn't the German commanders fault that Hitler was nuts and made poor decisions.
This. The German army of WW2 would have dick slapped any other military force 1 on 1 at the time and it honestly wouldn't even be close. It would be like our Military going up against another today.

The current United States military.
11 Aircraft carriers each carrying an entire air wing that can deliver strikes hundreds of miles inland from hundreds of miles offshore and protect themselves at the same time. Each carrier has the battle group that comprises all of the naval warships that protect each carrier battle group and add capabilities the carrier can't do as efficiently. There are missile frigates riding with each carrier group ready to deliver munitions on shore when manned aircraft aren't needed. There are close in anti aircraft/missle killing ships. There are fast attack subs hiding in the oceans near the battle groupd that are protecting all the ships in the carrier battle group from approaching warships. There are tenders to make sure the battle group is fed and supplied and can keep going. Again, there are 11 of these groups.
Outside of these carrier groups, we've got the boomers roaming the oceans on their own ready to deliver nuclear apocalypse to any spot on the planet if need be.
On top of that, we've got a standing Army ready to go wherever they're sent. In that army, there are specialized troops to handle mountainous terrain, desert terrain, urban terrain, any terrain or situation you can think of. There are recon units ready to supply the front line ground troops with the information they need to kill and stay alive. And, they have a command and control structure that is designed to most effectively disseminate information and orders to the entire army.
The Air Force has stealth strategic bombers able to leave Missouri and deliver precision munitions on target and on the other side of the fricking planet and then safely fly home. They've got a stealth air superiority fighter that can never turn on its radar and still hit numerous targets a hundred miles away using only data streamed down from JSTARS and AWACS data. When THOSE planes get low on fuel, there's a literal gas station in the sky they can hook up to and fly indefinitely if need be. If you need close air support, they'll send in an A-10 to BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT the frick out of any enemy. They've also got space command running the communuications and spy satellites to feed information to everyone. It shite meets fan, though, they also have the space command handing the ICBMs.
And, after all of that, we've got the United States Marine Corps. These are people who are that kind of special crazy enough to earn the title "United States Marine" and then go out and do Marine things like taking a beachhead one foot at a time, then securing a beachhead so everyone else can safely get on the beach. Marines are crazy, but they're the good kind that's on our side.
The US military is the greatest military force the planet has ever seen. Period.

Just say US Navy already. Carrier groups are a force far beyond imagination.

Didn't want to give short shrift to the other branches. But, yeah, the US Navy alone can wreck shop more than any other entity on the planet.

If we can dismiss Lee's army as having benefited from an excellent strategist, could we not dismiss the Nazi's surrender at least in part to poor strategy?

I don't know about army but the best soldier top three would be The roman soldier The confederate soldier The german soldier of WW2 Honorable mention Spartan
That's a pretty good list, the U.S. Marine Corps being the most overrated fighting force in the history of warfare. They do however have the greatest Public Relations team hands down.

The German armies of both WW1 and WW2 were just incredible.

Royal navy was pretty impressive for a long period of time.
British navy early 1800's would be my answer. The sun never set on the British empire for a reason. They dominated the seas and allowed the creation of a huge colonial empire based in a relatively small island.

My Dad, a USMC pilot, flew Nimitz back from the surrender in a Marine B-24 that had been modified to be a VIP plane.
He stashed a Japanese rifle and bayonet on the plane that he had picked up on Okinawa.
