Does anyone have any experience in grant writing? I have some basic questions if so. Having a tough time finding a grant writer for my non profit. I’m meeting with a potential one on Sunday but she’s super green. Thanks in advance.

What do you need to know. I’ve helped with a few grants.

Basically, what’s the going rate for one. Some charge hourly, some a percentage of the grant (they prefer hourly), what’s the best way to keep up with them if I am paying them hourly etc

I would imagine you are billed like an attorney would bill you. Not sure how you would keep up with it. The grants I worked on were in-house.

I would find someone that gives you a firm price, not hourly. Seems like a good way to get fricked over.

I am a freelance grant writer and charge a set fee, which is usually $650. The most time consuming part of the process is researching prospective foundations.

If you find a grant writer who is available immediately don't hire them.
A good grant writer will be in demand.
Also, it will be them interviewing you...not the other way around. A good grant writer is better than gold. There are a lot of mediocre ones.

I don’t know shite about grants but if I had to make up some bullshite, I’d go with the following.
Dollar amount of X or 3% of total grant received whichever is greater
2% up front then 2% upon receiving
Knock off about 20% of whatever he says his rate is (or she).
Hourly rate of X not to exceed total amount of Y
