Oh and DON'T do the Skywalk thing at the GC.

Total ripoff of money. Huge money grab by the Native American tribe that owns the land. They charge you like $100 to walk on it. You cannot bring anything with you(no personal cameras...you lock your belongings in a locker). Can only buy their photos they take that cost like $20-30 a pop. Also have to pay $$ to park there as well if you drive. And there is no place near it to just walk around and enjoy the views from the rim. And it's no where near the South Rim National Park.

Yeah we are staying away from that tourist trap and heading to the south rim.

Helicopter tour into the GC, have a picnic, fly over Lake Mead, Hoover Damn, Vegas Strip.

Takes 3 hours.

$350 per person.

All you need to see.

If you drive to GC you can do a helicopter tour there. That's what we did. About $200 a person and I wanna say we were up in the helicopter like 90 minutes. We did that and still had plenty of time to go walk around the rim at the park before driving back that day.

You saw views of the GC within minutes of takeoff as well. It didn't land down at the bottom but did a pretty extensive tour over the canyon.

We just got back from there. Early flight in. Drove down there and biked around the park once we got there and biked up the hill to some of the views then biked back down. Took about two hours but it was a pleasant experience if you're active.
Stayed about halfway back between there and Vegas.

Helicopter trip, they usually swing by the Hoover Dam on the way back as well.

Only way to do it imo

I've rented a car and driven from Vegas to the Grand Canyon and back. Take a helicopter tour instead. It's a lot of driving and leaves very little time to do much.

Helicopter tour looks like the way to go. Is sunrise or sunset the better time to do it or does it even matter? Suggestions on tour operator for heli?

Helicopter tour sounds awesome. Do they take you down in the canyon where it completely surrounds you or is just a flyover birds eye view?

If you drive to the south rim, and are in reasonable shape, hike down 30 minutes or so on Bright Angel. If you are not from the southwest it is pretty cool to experience that style of trail, and of course the views. Just remember however long you hike down it will take twice as long to get back up.

Headed to Vegas and want to take a day trip to GCNP. According to google it's a 4 hour drive. My question is would it be better to rent rent a vehicle and head down there or go with a tour group?

Rent a car.

You don't want to be stuck where you are while everyone is looking around.

As you mentioned this isn't even technically in the Grand Canyon National Park. It's advertised in Vegas as the "West Grand Canyon." Don't fall for it and go to GCNP (North or South Rim)

After going to national parks and landmarkS in this country, I sometimes wonder if a higher percentage of foreigners over the percentage of Americans have seen our nation's wonders .

I think many Americans just take for granted the amazing variety of gorgeous scenery our country has to offer. It's very enticing for foreigners to visit here because of this.

I've been to a lot of national parks and the Grand Canyon was the most disappointing to me cause there really isn't much to do unless you go down in it, which is something that isn't really great for a day trip and requires paperwork, etc.

I've been to a lot of NPs as well, but I'm in strong disagreement here that there "isn't much to do." There is no paperwork required to hike part way down into the Canyon and back for a short day trip to get some spectacular views.

On the South Rim look up the South Kaibab Trail and see if you are up to hiking down to Skeleton Point. Incredible views. A less strenuous route into the Canyon with great views is Bright Angel Trail. There is also a Rim Trail that you can do, as well as various lookout points.

The North Rim is MUCH less crowded than the South Rim. There's a great Rim Trail here as well. We also hiked a trail through aspens and forest called Widforss Trail that opens up often to great views of the Canyon. Incredible aspen groves throughout. If you are feeling sporty, there is the North Kaibab trail down into the canyon, although this is more strenuous. Again, you do not need to go all the way down, most people just hike down a ways and come back up.

The North and South Rims are very different in landscape. The North is much cooler as it's a thousand feet higher.

I've often wondered the same thing. It hit me at Yosemite NP. So many foreigners here, Asian and European. The vast majority of people that I know have never been to a NP outside of Smokey Mountain Nat'l Park.

Take a helicopter ride. It's cheaper than a car and saves you a ton of time!
