That doesn't really answer the question. What genre are they if they aren't a rock band?
Answer my question first. Do you think War on Drugs play the same type of music as the bands I listed?
What puts them in the same category specifically?

You'd honestly put them in the same group as Metallica, Nothing More, Fozzy, 10 Years, In This Moment, etc?
They aren't even remotely the same.
Probably not. Although I'll admit I'm not familiar with any of those bands other than Metallica. I didn't realize the Grammy's had an alternative category, which is probably where they fit better, but I'm fine with them in the Rock category. I'm not going to call it a "joke".
The National is also one of my favorite bands and they won the Alternative category, but I think this most recent album is their weakest album by far. They are getting by on name now.

s. It's really frustrating how actual rock n roll with real guitars has basically been surgically removed from popular culture and terrestrial radio.

Holy shite you think rock is just one thing that sounds the exact same? Metal, djent, punk rock, indie rock, etc etc don't exist?
Subgenres bruh. Come on.

No it is a joke, specifically because the alternative category exists and they were instead placed in rock. They are not rock. At all.
Go listen to the bands I listed. Even for a few seconds. Then come back and tell me you can honestly say War on Drugs is a rock band and deserves to be in the same group as them.

The founding member and songwriter of War on Drugs is a legit guitarist.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not rock music.
They have real instruments and musicians. And yes they also incorporate synths and technology, but rock has been doing that since the invention of the synth and the electric guitar.
Also, indie sound rock can be cool as frick depending on your mood.
A Deeper Understanding is a very legit album. Give it a chance.

I find it kind of comical that 10 Years was mentioned in this discussion.
Wouldn't Metallica be classified as metal?

Why? Are you saying they're not a rock band?

They are absolutely a rock group and thru absolutely deserve to be called such and the newest album was awesome.
Also, you listened a few different genres of rock. They belong to the indie genre of rock. And they're great.

Alternative category in the Grammy's bruh. Come on.

I'm not commenting on the quality of their music. I've already said I like some of it.
I'm commenting on the fact they were placed in a category they had no business being in.

pop

You're not getting what I'm saying. The Alternative Music category exists in the Grammy's. And that is the category War on Drugs belongs in. Not rock.

you seem to believe that "rock" has to have a certain sound and that anything else belongs in "alternative"
why?

War On Drugs are not a pop band.

You listed Metallica dude. As an example of rock n roll? You think a metal band is a good example of classic rock and roll?
I assume you're fine with Metallica, RHCP, Zeppelin, Tool, Iron Maiden, foreigner, Synyrd, Yes, and The Who all being called Rock despite sounding fundementally different.
Also, have you listened to the song Pain from the newest album? If that's not firmly in the category of kick arse guitar straight awesome rock music, I don't know what the frick is.
