A girl has the word that in her hand. she could have chosen another that that was on the same table but didn't. Therefore, That that that that girl has is only one of the two she could have grabbed.
If that helps.
If that helps.

I simply answered the question and made no judgment on the example sentence.

Well “anyways” is a word too but it doesn’t mean I have to use it.

Ha!! far from a grammar geek. How I remembered that from 30 years ago I have no clue.
A real grammar geek could explain much better I'd think.

what is it that you do do?

Yes you can, but you need to put a comma between the repeated word.
I know that, that is not the answer.
I'd use a semicolon instead of a comma.
Each section can be a sentence on its own (I know that. That is not the answer.) so the semicolon works better in connecting two independent clauses.
I know that; that is not the answer.

Commas are an excellent way to convey a statement and cause the statement the meaning that you are intending

I prefer to avoid redundantly repeating myself over again to make the same point twice or more.

Unless you are writing a script, you should never write that.

I can use 4 hads in a row with ease. Not so much that.
Posted on 12/15/21 at 9:53 pm to LSUFreek
That that is even a question is silly.

I admit it looks odd, so if possible I always try to italicize the second that.

There was an old linguistics sentence we studied back in grad school: "That that that that that." Technically grammatically correct since the word "that" can be used in multiple ways, noun, verb, adjective, etc.--a quirk of the English language which allows special treatment for the word.

See what your question led to LSUFreek? Ask and someone will be able to supply you with an answer. Some better than others.

Just because our language has latin origins doesn't mean it has to follow the same rules. In fact, English is superior to Latin because we aren't as restricted. Also, they're dead, and we're not. And the the Brits can go frick themselves for trying to act all fancy and shite.
