This was my initial thought, except it's almost impossible for me to get off of work right now. I'm covering an entire hospital with no help. If there's any sort of emergency and I'm 2 hours away, I'm screwed.

Just sack up and ask them. Call the dad and ask when he will be home because you would like to speak with him. Bring the ring with you and ask if you have his permission. Thats what I did and it went over well with both the mom and dad.
