^^^ This guy speaks truth
Cottonmouths is the only snake, venomous or not, that I've ever seen actively pursue a human.
I've heard that Mambas will chase people, but thankfully I've never encountered one as I have no plans to ever visit Africa.
Most snakes will do everything they can to avoid people, cottonmouths give ZERO fricks

Well, did you read my post? I clearly stated that I was ready to hit them with the paddle if they got close enough.

The simple answer as only one person mentioned is you're a man (allegedly) and have a paddle.
Use it
The OP says that I would have used the paddle had they not changed direction.
Def not a baw, but at least I can read.

It seems like the people that believe that its 100 percent fact that they aren't aggressive towards humans act as if they have some kind of chip on their shoulder towards the people who think that they might be aggressive towards humans. Pretty strange tbh..

It's fear. People are afraid of snakes, and I think a lot of them like being afraid of snakes. It's like a cool horror movie they saw. Everyone wants to believe whichever snake they saw was some kind of venomous and dangerous killer. People misunderstand snake behavior and imagine sinister intentions that don't exist.
If you paddle your canoe up into the back of a cove and see two carp in the shallow water, what do they do? They haul arse toward deeper water. If they have to come straight toward you and under your boat, that's what they do. Nobody thinks those carp are out to get them. But, if a snake does that, even if it's a harmless garter snake, for some reason, people believe it's "chasing them." Snakes are just like carp. They want nothing to do with you. If you back one into a corner, or step on one, it will probably bite you. So will a squirrel.

I guess I have mixed reviews.
On the farm while walking on levees there been many of times cotton mouths have been laying 2 to 3 ft from my feet hiding in the weeds. Actually smelled them as they are stinky. I moved slowly away and as I usually do and could see them run away once they had room.
Ran into a cottonmouth could tell by the head and saw eyes while fishing. That bad boy got aggressive with me while fishing near a tree in the bayou he was on. He could have felt cornered.
My grandfather when I was little caught one with his hands near me while walking on the farm. He showed me how to tell if s snake was poisonous and how to catch them. That old man did not seem to be phased by snakes as it was normal to run into them on the farm.
Ran into a lot of water snakes and rat snakes that will hold their ground and sometimes chase you a few feet. These seem more aggressive.
I guess snakes have their good and bad days like us.

Moccasins can’t bite Alabama people in canoes.

They will follow you home and wait for you to come out of the house the next morning

This is a friend of mine's YouTube channel. He and his boys know a thing or two about local serpents.

did you pay the merchant fee, or did they? Those open air, off the premises transactions can be expensive. Or were you in their place of business?

Case in point

Bro, where did I ever imply that I thought that snakes were "sinister" or "evil"? I never said that it was a "dangerous killer."
I never even said that the snakes were coming to bite me.
But two large, venomous snakes came directly towards us from 10 feet away. On a goddamn bee line. That happened. I doubt that we were in any immediate danger, but like it said, we had a dog tied into the boat, and if the dog had have freaked out and tipped the canoe over, we would've been in the water with two large moccasins.

Right because carps and squirrels=\=venomous, deadly snakes. Great.
Again, not sure why you and others get so worked up over a story that is 100 percent true. I'm sorry if the terminology of "charge" and "chase" upset you.
Fwiw my dad was bit by a venomous snake a month before this took place, about a mile away from where this took place. Must've been a dry bite though.

So, because you don't believe it, everyone who has stated otherwise in this thread is a liar.
I'm pretty sure, if you'd like to come to Arkansas, that I can find a few places and snakes that will make you the same kind of liar, and perpetuator of myths that I am. It's getting a little late in the year, so hurry if you're coming.

used to belong to a hunting club that leased a bunch of acreage in the basin, everyone had to go on at least two work trips during the summer to help clear trails to get to the hunting areas, dog runs, clean up the bunkhouse, etc., the first one of these work trips I showed up for it looked like we were going on a seek and destroy mission in VN, was wondering wtf? they would space out all of the armed guys among us carrying ma-che'-tes' and other brush clearing tools and we'd go single file clearing trails, it sounded like a fire fight for a couple of hours with all of the cottonmouth shootings, they were everywhere, moccasins were tPOS, some were stumbled upon but I saw plenty of them coming at the group, maybe they thought we were prey but they definitely showed aggression in the swamp

You're not necessarily a liar. You're just wrong. If you can find one video of a cottonmouth chasing someone, I'll listen. Surely, since it's so common, it will be easy. I can find lots of videos of them not chasing people. Just like I can find lots of videos with no bigfoot in them.
