I work in big ag. - we have been fooling with totally autonomous tractors and combines for over 20 years.
We have a lot less liability because of the distance from the general public- and our routes are much more predictable.
We are probably 15 years away and we have a better head start.
On the other hand, mining vehicles have been autonomous for over a decade.
The adoption rate is taking off, but I think regulatory issues will slow it.
As far as jobs, every conversation I've ever had goes back to this- no one will lose a job to a machine, but the companies just won't backfill from normal attrition.

Those people will have to train themselves in some other skillset. This is basic economics.
The problem with this is that these jobs are depleting in industries across the board. It's bad news for everyone.

I bet the large freight company execs are drooling over getting this technology implemented. Fund managers probably wanting in on the action too.
The 23 year old in Wisconsin wouldn't have destroyed the 123 year old bridge if that truck had been automated.

Not really, we're entering into a new territory that current economic models aren't built for. There's not going to be enough productive jobs for people to do. It's gonna be a whole new world soon and we're all gonna be poets or hedge fund managers not really contributing shite but doing our damnedest to convince ourselves and others that we serve a purpose.
Personally I'm looking forward to it.
This is problematic. People need to be occupied. We have 3.5 billion people in the world that are below the median IQ level. The vast majority of these people do not need to be painters, poets, or TD posters. The current model maintains an orderly society and gives humans something to work for.
This paradigm shift, in my view, dehumanizes us. It de-emphasizes the value of people and many of the concepts that define our humanity. I don't see how this is something that is positive or aspirational.

Self driving cars sound absolutely boring as frick. Below is the best road I drove on this year and if I was forced to use a self driving car I would have just jumped off the mountain and ended it there.

Well if driverless cars are really that much safer you may see the speed limits raised.

Yeah but there's a difference between being occupied out of necessity and being occupied doing something you want.

No offense, but I think that's a very gloomy outlook on humanity. Not everyone who does what they love will be Kierkegaard, but I think the average garbage man would be happier fishing with his kid or learning how to paint than picking up garbage.

I disagree. I think when we're left to our own devices and not inhibited by scarcity or need to work to survive, we'll see what real humanity is. But one way or another, one of us will be proven right soon, and hopefully in our lifetimes.
Or I guess it might not be so earthshattering and we'll just find an artificial thing to work for to keep us all busy.

Driverless cars has the same chance of happening in 9 years as this does in 9 years-zero, zip, nada, etc.
The Obama administration released new Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards requiring automakers to raise the average fuel efficiency of new cars and trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.

I'm wondering how this will directly affect insurance rates and liability issues.
What will happened when you are hit by a self-driving car? Also, what will happen when your self-driving car hits another?
