Just got a house with a pool and I think I want to give maintaining it on my own a shot. Anybody here learn pool maintenance on their own? What resources did you use to learn?

I simply talked to friends with pools and googled what I wanted to know more about. Then I said the hell with it and have a guy that comes regularly. He probably fricks my wife too but my pool looks amazing.

Get friendly with local pool supply company. They will test your water regularly and tell you what chemicals to use , how much, and when

Pool was installed after I moved in to current home.
It's very easy to maintain IMO. Now the system in use is brand new so it's not like I have to do much, it generally does it on it's own.
All I do is test the water, add salt if needed. The salt then turns into chlorine. Empty the catch basins for leaves and snakes and other items. Run the vacuum once a week or do it manually if I'm bored.
If you can do basic math and measurements you should be able to maintain your levels and not have algae growing everywhere.
What type of pumping system?

Honestly don't even know enough about it yet to tell you. All I know is it's a sand filter pump.

Watch porn. Some of the pool boy scenes are very instructive.

Better test them first. I recommend taking them a water sample out of a freshly opened bottle of water. They should recommend chlorine and soda ash, but that's it. If they recommend a bunch of other chemicals, find someone else or get a kit and do it yourself.

Lots of stress with Mrs. STLDawg until I hired someone for upkeep. Once I got a professional she’s been in a much better mood.

Not that difficult. Faced that same situation last year. Take water sample in to a pool place the first time and make sure everything is good. Once it is, check the chlorine and PH yourself and keep it in balance. Really wasn’t that hard.
Also, buy a good pool vacuum. Bet purchase I made in regards to a pool.

If you go with local pool company over troublefreepool you are an idiot or just love wasting money.
Eta your pool should stay in perfect condition 99.9% of the time with borax, liquid bleach and baking soda.
If you ever buy those stupid expensive chemicals from the pool store you are a sucker.
