Seeing your gf every single day when you first start dating. By the 5th or 6th month, we were about to kill each other.

Does your wife know of any peer reviewed journal articles that show that baby sign language hurts speech development? Because it seems that doctors recommend it and the research I saw indicated that it helps speech development.
I've asked her about that. And I had the same experience as you researching online. The research seemed spotty in general though. I'll ask her again.
But, for her students/patients (again hearing impaired), there is so much going on and the goal at this specialty school is for the kids to learn to speak and communicate with words (and not "sound deaf."
And these aren't infants, so it's different.
She even covers her mouth so they don't read lips.
Definitely a different issue from teaching sign to an infant.
My gut says it's fine (beneficial to neutral) for most kids and potentially harmful for some. I personally would rather focus on teaching my kids to speak and read really well and introduce foreign language early than screw w signs, but that's just my amateur opinion.

she became so fixated on simple hand communication that she didn't want to learn to speak. She never wanted to vocalize. She would just make hand gestures. It got so bad my friend had to hire a communication specialist to work with he
This is weird because I usually wish that kids would shut the frick up

We have so many friends and siblings with 3 to 6 year olds right now, and they all talk INCESSANTLY. It's amazing that they aren't hoarse all the time. It's cute until you are ready to happily stick ice picks in your ears.
I remember when kids were "seen and not heard." Now they just run around interrupting everyone.
