Good Ideas That Came Back To Haunt You

My best friend had his first new born and thought it would be a great idea to teach her sign language. He believed this would not only stimulate her brain at a young age but also improve early year communication skills.
He was right in that he was able to communicate at a much earlier age than normal with his daughter but she became so fixated on simple hand communication that she didn't want to learn to speak.
She never wanted to vocalize. She would just make hand gestures. It got so bad my friend had to hire a communication specialist to work with her and had to have doctors double check to make sure she didn't have an extra chromosome.
She was fine and is doing great now but it took almost 5-6 years to get her speaking regularly.
He had another kid recently and that kid doesn't know sign language
What are some random OT stories where a good idea in theory came back to bite you in the arse.

My wife is a speech and language specialist and hates when people teach babies to sign for the very reason described in OP. She teaches deaf/hearing impaired kids w cochlear implants or hearing aids and there is 0 sign language in her classes/sessions.

Does your wife know of any peer reviewed journal articles that show that baby sign language hurts speech development? Because it seems that doctors recommend it and the research I saw indicated that it helps speech development.

You think because the child was excelling in sign language but not speaking as often as she should, that she had Down syndrome?
