Good book on Louisiana History

I'm looking for some good reads on louisiana history, and especially south LA. Maybe even some Folklore type reads. History of this state has always been intriguing to me.

I would like to look a few different louisiana periods, such as; time of louisiana purchase, settlement of the Cajuns that where exiled from Canada, pre-civil war,post civil war

To get a true louisiana history, you need to realize the first settlement west of the mississippi was FORT ST. JEAN BAPTISTE STATE HISTORIC SITE in Natchitoches

Paul Morphy (1837-1884) of New Orleans became World Chess Champion in 1858, the youngest ever. Morphy is significant not only in Louisiana history, but American history as well -- he was the first American in any cultural field to triumph in Europe. His house is now Brennan's restaurant.
