maybe it's a safety issue. Traffic cop can't face the flag during the anthem AND make sure pedestrians don't get mowed down.

So if I don't hold my hand to my chest, remove my hat, and pay attention to the anthem I'm responsible for some overly sensitive prick beating the crap out of me? I don't like folks disrespecting the flag but the only thing that is hurt is your feelings. It doesn't justify violence.
