We had an M.D. in my class who was in his late 50's. Pretty cool guy. Did expert testimony work previously and wanted a J.D. to get into medical malpractice defense. If your friend can easily build his own practice in a niche area, he should go for it.

This is the problem. I do believe that most of the schools have their own programs that do the same, regardless of the state reinmursement.
Your friend needs to contact the Law Center. If it's free, with 50% discount on books, his decision would likely be made.

I had no problem with it at all. He was quite wealthy and put in the work. He just did stuff with his wife's in house lawyers for her business if I recall. It was something he had always wanted to be, but business opportunities took him elsewhere.

I know it's a bit Law School, but I had an uncle that retired in his mid 50s and went back to school and got a PhD in History. He had been an engineer his whole life.

He is going to be 65 anyway. Might as well be 65 with a law degree. He needs to make himself happy and ignore any nay sayers.

I was accepted to a couple of law schools after I retired at age 56. I had already traveled the world, would not have required loans, and being already retired it would not really matter if I ever made a dime as a lawyer. I didn't go because one of my kid's pointed out that if I took that seat at a law school it could bump some 20 year old kid out their chance for having a career they may have dreamed of all their life, and where I may have got to use the education for 15 years if at all, they could have a 50 year career.

Oh hell no.
He’s almost sixty when he gets out, and he has no real legal skills. It takes a very long time to be proficient in law. He doesn’t have it.

I suspect the first day this guy thinks he is suffering he will say screw it.
Travel? He has traveled a lot. I think he just wants something to do and really wants to work for a DA or a defense firm.

It seems to me, and correct me if I'm wrong, there is a real need in this country for people that are injured thru no fault of their own to have access to legal representation. It would be a truly noble undertaking. Nobody ever thinks about the little guy that was in a wreck and therefor needs a check

You don't have to go to law school to pass the bar..you only need to pass the bar to become an attorney...given that:
I'm not a lawyer so honestly asking, if you are 55-60 and plenty enough money to retire comfortable is going to law school truly the best way to pass the bar at that age?
I mean I know the answer seems obvious, but most people go to law school to get a class ranking to land a job right? This guy likely just wants to pass the bar and work for the government.

Uh, no. At least in 46 states, you have to go to law school to take the bar. In the other four, you have to apprentice.
