Does he want to learn a skill that translates to civilian life then AF or Navy, but since those are out of the question, go Army and make sure his field is clearly committed to by the Army before signing papers don't let a recruiter fool you.

If he wants to be a badass, go Marine Corps. This coming from the son of TWO Marines.

not a whole lot of private sector job openings in that field

My son wants to enlist after high school. He's pretty firm on that. He does not want to make the military a career. Which branch would be better for him and for his life after the service? He is not interested in the Air Force, the Coast Guard, or the Navy.

It kind of already sounds like he knows what he wants and doesn't want.

Hahaha agreed.

Air Force has by far the best technical billets, Navy will give him plenty of opportunity too. In the Army there are way, way, way more combat type billets than depot, mechanic, engineer stuff.

Yep, I'm not sure why a kid that does not want to make career of the military would want anything to do with the infantry, unless he's not out of the G.I. Joe phase yet. I'd suggest joining the Air National Guard, while going to college, and become a pilot, but that's just me.

Maybe he just wants to do his part. You will gain a lot more leadership experience and people skills in the infantry than you would in a technical billet. A lot of ignorant fools on here will disagree with that but it's true.

That's pretty much his reasoning.

Be a good father and advise him not to.

If he is looking to do cool stuff as an infantry soldier there are way more options in the Army. Hands on mechanical can be found in both Marines and Army. Slots for MOS's like wheeled vehicle mechanics are readily available. If look at the post service educational benefits the Army is better. If he transitions from regular Army to National Guard in LA you get tuition exemption and you still get your GI bill which can be used for living expenses or drinking like I did.

Buddy of mine was trying to join the marines. They kept pushing back his boot camp date. This went on for a year. He finally just said frick it. I'm making decent money without getting shot at. Now he's a h.s graduate with no college experience making 70 k a year running his own construction company.

They are the exact same.

You can leave the Marines and join the guard. I highly recommend this if he's planning on college after the service, regardless of which branch he decides on initially. Make sure it's the guard he joins after getting out though. Regular Marine or Army reservists do not get tuition exemption.

My point was two fold and I'll explain further. Continuity of branch is the first one. If you cross branch after regular Army you will almost always have to go back to an MOS specific course in the Marines. The LA national guard reference was more about availability of a direct MOS slot as well as abundance of locations to drill at. Yeah the dollar figures are the same, GI bill is a GI bill. Definitely need to make sure its the guard to tuition exemption.

I deal with a lot of machine shops run by former air force machinists. That is a trade that can make you some serious money. If it were my kid I would push toward the air force.

I hear ya, but I think he wants infantry and I doubt it would be hard to find a spot for that anywhere.
