Going Enlisted--Marines UPDATED Question about MEPS
Posted on 7/2/14 at 11:07 am

My son wants to enlist after high school. He's pretty firm on that. He does not want to make the military a career. Which branch would be better for him and for his life after the service?
He is not interested in the Air Force, the Coast Guard, or the Navy.
UPDATE to original post. May 2015
My son is starting the enlistment process with the Marine Corps. He is set to interview then head to MEPS. Any tips on MEPS? Any pitfalls or tricks to the process? Any help appreciated.

What does he want to do after his service to our country?

What does he want to do while in service? More importantly, what does he want to do afterwards?

Does he want to be a frontline grunt?

Answer these questions and you'll have your answer.

Presently, he wants to go to college after the service. Beyond that, he will want to do something mechanical and hands one.

The Coast Guard normally sees the most action fwiw. Plenty of rescue work and drug interdiction, not nearly as much hanging out waiting for something to do.

Yes.
Well then, there's no question.

He is fully aware of that.

Of the two, the Army has more jobs available, what he qualifies for and what's available at enlistment is another story.
Have him take the asvab and then look at both, he'll have a better idea on what they'll offer.
The Marines will be the cool choice, but if he does his research and wants something other than combat arms, the Army will be a better fit.
