re: Going down the rabbit hole of pictures from years past

It dawned on me recently that our experiences we have with "old pics and videos" from our childhoods won't be the same experiences that our children will have.
They'll know how old they are because they know the people in them, but technology has come so far that high definition is blending a lot of that stuff together. Going through old photos at my parents house recently, I could pic the decade based on not only who was in the pictures, but the style of photograph and the clothes the people were wearing in them. Then I was watching baseball highlights on YouTube that could have been from last week, but turns out some of the games were 15 years old.

Make disks or thumb drive copies and distribute them to your kids and relatives. Put labels on people's pictures because in a generation or two, nobody will recognize who is who among great grand parents and beyond.

Looking at pictures of my kids when they were smaller or loved ones who aren't around anymore just makes me feel a little depressed TBH. It makes me wonder why I take so many pictures in the first place when all they do is make me sad. Maybe one day I will have your positive perspective about it.
I was doing fine, but now I have a lump in my throat, tears in my eye. And for that, I am thankful. Grief is the price we all pay for love.

I lost a bunch of pictures off of my phone.
Went to my parents online obituaries and got those but still missing a lot.
Got teary eyed doing just that.

Same big time. Not as much loved ones who aren't around anymore though. Parents still living, others were mostly very old.

I know a guy, who saved every pic girls sent him when he was dating before he was married. Apparently its like 100s
He braggs about it. Like it is some sunken tresure.
Somoved all the pictures to a email address so it isnt located on his phone or home computer for his wife to find.

It took me a long while to have the perspective I now have.
A lot of self-reflection, a lot of looking at things as best as I could from a different point of view, a lot of counseling, and a lot of stop feeling sorry for myself (even when I used to think I didn't).
You can get there, but it won't be an overnight change. You will need to be very intentional about your thoughts, and correct yourself when you start to fall back into old habits.

How did she go about digitizing them? My mom has some shoeboxes full of photos from the 80s-90s

I have many thousands of photos taken over decades. Was able to make a nice photo montage for my mother's funeral service, which was the best use I've had for family photos.
Here is a snapshot from September 2018, not taken with one of my better cameras though. I have pics of ships. planes, cars, horses, rabbits, squirrels, elephants, camels, landscapes, railway trestles and locomotives. Have taken only a few since my daughter graduated and went off to college and on to life in a distant state. Sometimes wish I could share a few but some of her photos would likely be "polarizing" here (lens joke, get it?). Have thought of making an Instagram or posting to some other site on the net, but just too lazy. Makes me sad to think that relatively few of my photos will be seen and appreciated by anyone else.

A scanner can digitize photos or negative. I have thousands of old negatives that I'm too lazy to scan.
