Today, GM unveiled the first image of its upcoming autonomous fourth-generation Bolt EV-based vehicle – the “first without a steering wheel or pedal.” The automaker also says that it filed a petition asking the DOT permission to deploy the vehicle as soon as next year. The move represents an accelerated self-driving timeline for the company, which could potentially leapfrog most other companies working on the technology since the most common timeline is a commercial launch in 2020-2022. The vehicle would represent the next generation of Cruise AV autonomous car based on the Bolt EV.

Support the move, but, ISO, it needs to have an option to drive it manually.

I'm willing to bet many states and local municipalities will fight this type of thing for awhile.
Eventually the winds will shift and autonomous cars will be the norm, but there will be a fight first.

They already have that Super Cruise feature in the Cadillacs. I wish that technology would make it into mainstream cars.
Would love to not have to drive at all on the freeway.

You don't need either to sit in Baton Rouge traffic. :rimshot:

Would not trust GM at this point with autonomous driving.

It doesn’t have a steering wheel or pedal? I still don’t see how that is possible. It seems like there would be times when you had to take over and manually get out of some situations

I'm fine with the technology as long as the government doesn't try to mandate it. Then I'll oppose.

But it doesn't look like this

I'm beginning to think autonomous car announcements are basically the millenial equivalent to "Free Beer tomorrow promotions"

the company that couldn't keep a key in the ignition now wants to drive you around autonomously
Wonder how many deaths/year their accountants will say justifies a recall...

This will happen eventually as they become more and more accepted, and the number of accident fatalities is reduced drastically, and traffic evaporates.
You would probably have to go through so many hoops to drive by that point that very, very few people will even be allowed to do so.
We are talking AT LEAST 30 years from that point, one would think, most likely longer.

How about they make some cars that aren't colossal POS before moving into the autonomous market. After my last Chevy truck I'll never buy GM again let alone have one drive me around.

This sort of thing is going to throw law enforcement for a loop.
How do you pull over the driver of a car that isnt driven by a person?
How can an autonomous car give reasonable suspicion of a crime to a person that isnt driving it?
Further, how can you ticket, impound, seize, cars that cant commit a crime?
This will have a major impact on roadside drug interdictions, ticket revenue, etc. I expect major LEO pushback from Police Unions, and their respective lobbies in state legislatures across the US.

Insurance for human drivers will become prohibitively expensive.
