We just got the attendance report for July, and for the first time in Glacier Park history, over 1 million visitors came to the park in a single month.

If you guys plan on visiting this fall, be aware that MDOT is shutting the Sun road down between Lake McDonald Lodge and Logan Pass for repairs; beginning around Columbus Day (Oct 9).

1.01 million people visited Glacier National Park in July. 1.04 million people live in Montana.

Which one? There are currently 25 of them.

As someone who frequents Glacier, reports like this give mixed emotions. I love the idea of more people in this country getting in touch with nature and enjoying its natural wonders. However, many of these individuals do not show up mentally prepared, treating these parks like they are their personal playgrounds, throwing rocks around, leaving trash behind, and hiking off trails.

I work for NPS in Glacier and it's astounding at how some (not all) visitors do not appreciate the idea of being decent and not trashing the park. The more people that visit, the worse it gets.

Fortunately, most people don't hike more than Avalanche, Hidden Lake, etc.

My cousin works in Glacier, and she always talks about how much work and effort that goes into maintaining the shorter, more frequently visited trails. Said she would much prefer to be out on the longer trails or the backcountry where a larger majority of hikers respect their surroundings.

That's exactly right. Avalanche Lake can be frequented by your everyday 90 year old or 300 pound child. These aren't the same types of people you see hiking Dawson Pitamakan, Siyeh Pass, Swiftcurrent Gunsight, etc.

Do you work mostly on the Whitefish side of the park? I spent a couple nights at the Reclusive Moose cabins last month.

I visited GNP at the end of July 2014. Glad I did at the time, because if this trend continues there will be a lottery system instituted.

It's very easy to get lost there away from the crowd. E.g. Logan Pass was the busiest area at 0900 but after a mile or so on the Highline all was well.

If we ever go back sans kids I will be heading straight for the backcountry. It's amazing out there.

You have made me curious on this one. Looks like a tough but rewarding hike. How is the lake level looking up there?

I work out of West Glacier, so yes, I suppose the "Whitefish side" is appropriate.

I do live in Whitefish though.

I didn't scratch the surface when I visited in 2014, but the Many Glacier area was unbelievable.

D-P is one of my favorite hikes. It's around 18 miles (give or take, if you spend time at Oldman Lake or No Name Lake, it's 19 miles).

The lakes are full.

The DP hike is awesome. For me it was no worse than Siyeh Pass (but way easier than Mt Brown). I'm in shape I guess and acclimated to the elevation/altitude changes. If you aren't used to those factors it may be tough. You basically are hiking a section of the CDT.

Winter and spring were certainly good for us this year.

That may be something to check out for me soon. May have to do a couple easy out and backs first, it has been awhile since I have done hikes that long, at that elevation.
