We adopted a black baby when she was 13 days old and she took swim lessons in the summers of '21 and '22. It was money well spent. She's nearly 8 1/2 and loves the water. She also loves camping.

But like someone else said, not nearly enough black people know how to swim and that needs to change. It can literally save your life or someone else's.

isn't drowning #1 as far as incidental deaths of children by a significant margin?

i don't understand parents who don't train their children to swim, take them to swim lessons, or at least put safety measures in place to safeguard them from open water.

Also - I’ve never seen so many people with socks and shoes on at a frickin swimming party - what’s the reason for that?

Did you put priority on giving the lessons because the baby was black lol? I think it has more to do with whether the parents know how to swim, access to pools, being able to afford lessons, etc...

They disqualified him, figured out he was just sprinting the pool instead.

My kid's been in swim lessons since 6 months old. Goes once a week. He's not even a year old yet and while he can't actually "swim" he's at the point where you can dunk him in the pool and he'll float on his own until you get to him and doesn't panic when he gets submerged. You should see how excited he gets when we walk into the building, he loves the pool and the water. It's wild that at less than a year old he has more water survival skills than a full fledged adult.

I could see in the ocean or a river where there's a current or undertow and the banks are far away, but when you're that old you should be able to get yourself to the side of a damn pool just by instincts, I don't understand it.

Absolutely not staged, black people aren't going to ruin their shoes getting them wet.

Children drown in bathtubs. Adults drown in shallow lakes. When panic sets in all bets are off. Never assume someone in a pool etc doesn't need help, always ask if they are ok.

Truth

Lifeguard at Water Slide (back in HS days) and it was truly amazing how many grown people couldn’t stand up in 3-4’ of water.
