This may be a stupid question, but if said water is known to have alligators in it why would you walk a dog next to it? Do you not think that the predatory instinct won’t kick in it when it sees a snack close to the water?

That’s fair. Nature gonna nature but you can still get your revenge.

I was talking with a friend about this today:
I lived in Miami for quite some time. The rule in Florida is to assume that ANY body of water has alligators in it.
Why is the same not true for Louisiana? People seem very nonchalant about alligators here.

Have retrievers who hunt with me and this is always in the back of my mind.
Heard a story about a Baw showing off his field trial dog in Chicot State Park several years ago....BIG dog gone mistake

Not a stupid question. I think her uncle just let his guard down tbh. And I don't think they've seen many gators in their little gated community. Obviously naive, but I think he learned his lesson.

My in-laws live on the Ross Barnett Reservoir in Madison, MS. They have gators trolling their banks occasionally and a there are stories of neighbor dogs (usually tiny) getting snatched.
When we're there I let my dog swim if he wants (rare), but first I get my arse out there with a big stick or rifle and look around to see if I can spot any. My guy is 80+ lbs so he isn't their normal prey, but I keep my eyes trained on the water when I can. Thankfully my dog also just prefers to sit on the dock and not swim so I don't have to worry too much.
I never let him go down there at night. I've spotlighted and seen those devil eyes too many times glowing on the surface.
ETA:
The bigger gators prefer the non-developed side of the lake and I think the smaller ones (8ft or less) are kicked out of that territory or something by the bigger ones because that's all they get by their house.

We are down here staying with them in St. Teresa FL. He was walking his two dogs this morning around a pond close to their house. An alligator attacked and dragged Millie into the water, under the surface. Gone.
I think her uncle is on the phone with fl wildlife right now, haven't talked to him about it. We were walking on the beach when it happened. Pretty sure he witnessed the whole thing.
Sitting here beside the other dog now, she witnessed it too. We're all in shock. Crazy shite.
OP thinks it’s amusing that a tragedy happened to a member of his girl friends family and instead of sharing his true feelings around people that are hurt he comes to random strangers to brag about their loss.

Well that's certainly a weird, dumb opinion that you have there.

Has Florida counted this as a COVID death yet?
Posted on 4/20/20 at 12:54 pm to Funky Tide 8
Oh man this sucks, I have two dogs and if this happened to one of them I would be devastated. I’m sure I would feel worse knowing I messed up and got distracted while the dogs were near that pond. I would imagine that’s how the OP’s GF’s Uncle feels, what a horrible situation.
Sorry to hear about this Funky Tide.

There are more instances of this same joke in this thread than COVID-19 cases in the world.

No real updates. Gator trappers are working on getting the gator out, if they haven't already, idk, we left this morning.
But here is a picture of a golden eagle that I took this morning down there. It's fricking wild down there.
And then a bald eagle I got on Saturday

Saw a Redbone Hawk in Lacombe once, down by the fish hatchery.

Wife, daughter and her friend watched our lab get eaten day LSU played Washington back in ‘11 iirc. It takes a while for them to recover. Sorry for your loss

I can’t believe that this uncle wasn’t aware that 99% of dog owners in Florida walk their dogs on leashes. I have been all over North Florida hunting with dogs, on rural farms with ponds, etc. and I have never seen a dog roaming free. They are always being handled with a leash. I am certainly in agreement with the level headed people in this thread who say that it is pure idiocy for someone to not have a dog leashed. Now... I understand that there are 1000s of hunting dogs that do this everyday without being eaten by a gator and this is just one anecdotal incident incident but I don’t really care. A dog died. And I will go to my grave never having forgiven this so called “uncle.” Y’all with me? Uncle dumbass ...am I right?

I live on the water and a 6' gator tried to take my neighbor's 45lb dog off the dock. Don't trust any gator
