Going to be in Houston next week and am debating taking a flight out of IAH late in the day. I will be working near Hobby. If I left Hobby at 5pm. How much would I hate my life trying to get to IAH at that time of day?

Probably take about 2 hours to be safe (I'd say normal time would be about an hour or an hour fifteen).. Why can't you just fly out of Hobby?

if you took the Beltway and exited 59N it wouldn't be all that bad...maybe 30 mins with some minor slowdowns.

taking 45 up to 59N would be quicker than taking 45N all the way to IAH though...but it would leave yourself an hour minimum just for the drive alone.

my rule: frick I-45..period. hate Gulf/North freeway with the heat of a thousand suns.

I would say take the Beltway from 45 to 59N but you are going to hit major traffic at the ship channel bridge from the plant guys getting off at that time. Then you are going to have to hit the toll booths but I still think you will be better off than taking 45 all the way.

If you could get on the Beltway at 4pm you would be golden.

I would give yourself 1.5 minimum and maybe 2 hours at that time. It should take about an hour, but one accident will crush you. Stay off 45 at all costs through or north of downtown. Hard to know the best way to go, but I would likely try 610 east and loop around to the Hardy Toll Road. There is no better way to drive north from teh city at that time other than the Hardy. You'll need to pay two tolls, but it's well worth it and the toll lines are not very long since almost everyone on the Hardy has a toll tag.

However long you plan for it to take, it will take fifteen minutes longer.

Take 45 N to 610 E, ride til the Hardy Till Rd N and exit at IAH. Still going to be a crap shoot.

What the hell is wrong with you...why not just get a flight on Southwest out of Hobby. Only reason for you to go to IAH is if you are trying to be cheap and fly on Spirit.

Southwest doesn't fly to the city I need to get to. I also don't fly Southwest.

Delta or American are options at Hobby but the limited number of departures causes some timing issues.

once you get past downtown 59 north should not be that bad. but I would suggest 610 to gt around downtown. The east side of the Loop should be ok during rush hour? but others may say otherwise.

good luck. you will need it no matter what.

Where are you trying to fly to/what date? Maybe I can help find a flight from Hobby or IAH for you. Looks like American's last flight to DFW from IAH is at 8:05pm, Delta's last flight to ATL from IAH is at 7:10pm, and United has a late night flight bank

Maybe take 610 the South Loop Eastbound all the way around to 59 North. Probably an hour at least. I have no idea what 610 in that area looks like around that time though.

Whatever you do, don't go 610 the south loop westbound and end up by the galleria. You will kill yourself.

ETA: I wouldn't frick with the Hardy. Too risky in a deadline situation to me. One accident and you're sitting for hours.

You might be able to do 45N to 59N at downtown too. Once you get out of downtown, 59 opens up a lot more. Still bank on an hour at least.

If you're dropping off a car give yourself an extra 1/2 hour also.

All in all, if your flight is before 7pm you'll be sweating it the entire time.

This is a bad idea. Don't try to go from Hobby to IAH at rush hour. Just don't.

Continental has (or had) about 6 daily flights between IAH and Hobby for people just like you.

FIFY

If you leave Hobby at 5:00 and have a 7:00 flight out of IAH you will not make it. A 7:00 flight boards at 6:40. You need to budget 2 hours just to make it to IAH at that time of day, much less return a rental, go through TSA, and walk the long, rambling concourses.
