Getting a new cell phone from Sprint

I currently have an iPhone 5 which I got from Sprint at least 4 years ago (don't remember exactly when). The contract has long since expired and I've just gone month to month since then. It has worked just fine but lately the battery is getting really bad. Apparently it's not eligible for that cheap battery replacement either. At some point I will have to get another phone.
Can someone explain to me, as if I'm a teenager, how in the world you get a cell phone from Sprint these days? It looks like I can a large amount of money and just buy one, or I can lease one for 18 months, at which point I can buy out the remaining amount, or, turn it in and I guess start over?
I'm not a fan of leases, I like to own stuff. But I'm not dropping $700 for a phone either. I don't need the latest and greatest technology.
Anyone can give guidance here? And yes I tried google and Sprint website and I'm still unclear.

Sounds like you need to switch to MetroPCS.

Go to the tech board and you'll get a better response. You can buy a Google phone and finance it for 0% without being tied to a particular carrier. Lease or zero percent financing is basically what the carriers offer now.

Don’t do it!
I switched last year and hate it! Horrible service reception. Can’t talk and surf, customer service is a joke!

I just went from Verizon to sprint with my iPhone X. Hate it. I can’t wait until I can bring my Apple products over to spectrum mobile.

He said in the OP he's had sprint for at least the last 4 years. Can you read?

I got on the iPhone forever plan a few years ago. I like it, Sprint serves me and the family well. I have had no reliability issues, and customer service has treated me well.

I am not familiar with Sprint....but if you are now month-to-month, couldn't you just tell them that you will sign some length of commitment contract if they will give you a new phone?
ETA: FWIW, a teenager would understand how to do all of this a lot better than us old bastards would!

I just bought my son a refurbished iPhone 6 from amazon. It looks like an open box return. Looks new out of the box and battery life is great. I checked and made sure it was compatible with my carrier. 64 gig and was less than $200. Got 20 bucks credit on my amazon CC too.

Apparently they don't do that any more. That's what I'm confused about.
And I've had sprint for 17 years. I could change but I have never really had any issues with them.

T mobile and sprint are merging, so the service will now be just bad instead of really bad

iFixit has a battery replacement kit that is reasonably priced and easy to use.

Buy a generation or two behind on Swappa and save the money.

This statement makes absolutely no sense.

I recently bought a Motorola (Best Buy) and an Essential (Amazon) unlocked phones for Sprint. Went to the Sprint Store, got a nano SIM for a BYOD (bring your own device), went home and called customer service to have them activated.

agree. sprint has the WORST customer service. look into a refurbished phone or do the google suggested above. good luck

Last year I picked up an iPhone SE for $150
