Getting a Louisiana Residential Builder’s License/Commercial

Without any college, simply on the job learning and studying.
I have a friend that knows the ins/outs of plumbing as well as extensive carpentry skills but has no college degree, however he can finish an entire house by himself easily and efficiently.
After doing research, a residential license needs a few requirements that I think I can help him with (financing, insurance, LLC, garnering business, marketing, HR, etc).
But passing the test is what I’m curious about.
Can I personally study for this license test, and then go about hiring out my friend and other workers?
Or should I help him get his license, and form a 50/50, possibly higher on my end bc of Early investments, but also contingent upon him paying me back/splitting the expenses of getting the license (insurance and proof of net worth, which is higher than he has)
I plan to eventually expand this to commercial, but would love to hear what an experienced contractor would suggest.
Thanks to any real answers.

the test is easy if you study
insurance is where you’ll need to finance him
also he will need seed money (200K ish)

also the state licensing board runs a course where they will teach new contractors basically everything they need to know to pass the test it’s like 8weeks and 350 bucks

Try the Money Board. They can be a lot of help

Do you want him as a partner? It’s a simple question. Any member can go take tests for the license purposes.

Woooah, explain to me please?
I saw a 10k net worth to get the license, and 100k insurance, are you saying 200k to complete a residential job?
Eta: what’s with the hate with contractors? Sure some are shady but it’s not an easy job if daddy doesn’t hand you the business

Not hard, you prove your financials, get put on the boards meeting agenda. If approved Then you get a test date and you have your license. But that was for my GC commercial. Took less than thirty days.

But yes they have large numbers taking the test and failing.

you need enough money in free cash to pay for the cost of construction of the first job, outright with no invoice draws. this does two things
1) allows you to establish a quick pay reputation with subs and vendors
2) eliminates the temptation to use revenues from one job to pay for the costs of another job
you will also need demonstrated free cash in order to acquire a bond, if needed

Nobody needs a damn bond for residential construction

also many parishes require a bond to be on file for any contracting activities
but I’m sure you knew that already
